Tiger Woods's Son Is a Golfer, Too! Here's What We Know About Charlie and His Sister, Sam

Whether you're a golf fan or not, we're willing to hedge a bet that you — like most people — can agree that pro-golfer and dad of two Tiger Woods is a household name. As of 2023, Woods is tied for first with Sam Snead for PGA Tour wins among all golfers and has also been the face of prominent athletic brands like Nike in the past. While Woods is known for holding numerous records and is regarded as one of the best golfers in the history of the sport, not every fan might be up to date on his family life. While married to his ex-wife, supermodel Elin Nordegren, between 2004 and 2010, they welcomed two children: Sam and Charlie.

Woods and Nordegren split in 2010, but Woods later said he wanted to be honest with his kids about what happened. "I've taken the initiative with the kids, and told them up front, 'Guys, the reason why we're not in the same house, why we don't live under the same roof, Mommy and Daddy, is because Daddy made some mistakes,'" Woods told Time in 2015.

Woods's oldest child, Sam, was born on June 18, 2007, just 24 hours after her dad was a runner-up in the 2007 US Open. Another fun fact? She's named after Woods's father, whose nickname was Sam growing up.

"We wanted to have a name that would be meaningful to either side of the family, my side or Elin's side, because she was born [the day after] Father's Day. It just happened to fit," Woods said during a press conference in 2007, per People. "My father had always called me Sam since the day I was born. He rarely ever called me Tiger. I would ask him, 'Why don't you ever call me Tiger?' He says, 'Well, you look more like a Sam,' " the golfer explained.

He also reflected on new fatherhood at the time. "It's just time management and understanding where your priorities are, and our priorities are Sam," he said. "That's the one priority. And from there, you work it out from there. It's been fantastic these last couple weeks to have Sam Alexis as part of our life."

Sam seems to prefer to keep a low profile, and has mostly remained out of the spotlight over the years. But in March 2022, she honored her father with a speech when he was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame. In her speech, Sam recalled the fear she felt after her father's near-fatal car crash in 2021. "We didn't know if you'd come home with two legs or not. Now, you're not only about to be inducted into the Hall of Fame, but you're standing here on your own two feet," she said. "This is why you deserve this. You're a fighter, you've defied the odds every time."

Born on Feb. 8, 2009, Charlie certainly seems to be taking after his father. In 2016, he tied for second at a US Kids Golf event and has been "dominating the South Florida junior golf circuit" ever since, according to Golf Digest. He also clearly picked up some of Woods's mannerisms judging by his reaction to watching Rafael Nadal take on Marin Cilic at the 2019 US Open (pictured above). The duo also joined forces and competed together in 2020, 2021 and 2022 at the annual PNC Championships.

Charlie has also proven himself to be a formidable golfer all on his own. In June, he won Hurricane Junior Golf Tour's Major Championship at Village Golf Course by a whopping eight strokes, per SB Nation, proving he definitely inherited some of his dad's skills.

While Charlie definitely seems to be following in his dad's footsteps, Woods has been clear about not wanting to pressure his son into anything. Charlie is "his own person," he told PGA in 2021. "I'm proud of whatever direction he chooses, whether he sticks with the game or not. That's one of the things that we made sure of. That Charlie was Charlie."

Still, he loves the chance to play ball with his son. "Any time I get a chance to spend time with my son, it's always special," he told ESPN in 2022. "And to do it in a competitive forum, the last couple of years have been magical, and to be able to do it again, we're looking forward to it."
