12 Ways to Stick to Those New Year's Resolutions You Made

Keeping resolutions in February vs. January = 1 billion times harder. Once the new year's buzz wears off and a month of #DryJanuary (or semidecent decision making) is complete, it's easy to lose motivation. If you're anything like us, that pint of Ben & Jerry's in the freezer is looking way more appealing than those gym clothes in the corner. To help you stay on track, we enlisted tips from trainers, yogis, nutritionists, and other wellness experts — consider your goals accomplished with their smart advice.

Choose Non-Appearance-Focused Goals

"My number one piece of advice is to make sure you tie every resolution to a goal that has nothing to do with your appearance," says personal trainer Emily Wiley. "For example, maybe you want to lose 30 pounds: instead of becoming obsessed with the number on the scale, link your goal to something unrelated to your weight loss, like completing a hike without stopping, doing a pull-up, or running a 5K."

"My favorite motto is 'remember why you started,'" adds Wiley. "Motivation wears off, but if you keep your end goal in mind, it helps a ton. When you feel like you want to slack off, ask yourself this: 'Is it worth it to sacrifice my goals for something I want right now?' It could be eating ice cream, sleeping in, skipping a workout . . . the answer's usually no."

Invest in Some Equipment

Invest in Some Equipment

To make at-home workouts easier, invest in some equipment, suggests Wiley. "Whether it's a treadmill (I love the new NordicTrack X22i — the screen is huge!), resistance bands, or a yoga mat, find pieces that work for your home, then create your own workout space. Also, keep your running shoes nearby and have an outfit ready to go. If you eliminate potential barriers, you're less likely to talk yourself out of working out."

Start New With Food

"Since most resolutions are geared toward health and getting a fresh start in the new year, a detox is a good way to kick off a weight-loss routine and feel more sustained energy," advises natural health physician Dr. Fred Pescatore. "I always remind my patients that our bodies detox naturally through the liver, so it's important to keep it healthy. I prefer ingredients that support the liver's ability to detox over cleanses that can sometimes be harsh."

Dr. Pescatore recommends the antioxidant Robuvit, which contains natural oak extract, known for normalizing the enzymes in your liver and keeping it functioning at its best. Did we mention it also improves fatigue and hangover symptoms like nausea? Miracle worker. Also helpful is resetting with a clean-eating plan.

Take Time to Meal Prep

The No. 1 rule to healthy eating? Everything in moderation, according to Purple Carrot founder and CEO Andy Levitt. "The key is not go to the extreme or completely deprive yourself of your favorite foods," says Levitt. "If you do, your healthy-eating resolutions just won't work. We've coined a new term to describe our approach: balanceatarian. That's someone who consciously integrates plant-based eating into their life while not completely giving up meat, fish, and dairy."

He continued, "Taking the time to meal prep and to plan a menu is the best way to do this. Whether you choose a meal kit delivery service or dedicate time on Sundays to prepping for dinners during the week, you'll be less likely to turn to takeout after work. Plant-based eating can also reduce the chance of high blood pressure by 55 percent and the chance of heart disease by 32 percent, and reduces the risk of depression."

Make Healthy Eating Fun

Make healthy eating fun by exploring new ingredients, trying different cooking techniques, and exploring new trends. Instead of chicken fajitas, try jackfruit fajitas, recommends Levitt. "Never had jackfruit before? It's a protein-packed tree fruit that Pinterest has deemed the 'superfood of 2017.' There are over 22,000 edible plants in the world, and many of us are only able to experience a small fraction in our day-to-day lives."

It's also all about moderation when it comes to booze. Levitt maintains, "It's easier to stay on track with healthy eating if you don't drive yourself crazy with withdrawal, so go ahead and have a cocktail now and then. If you want a good drink without the added calories of alcohol, you can always make a mocktail."

Rock Bright Workout Gear

Not everything has to be a challenge when it comes to keeping your resolutions. Even what you wear can help. "Having bright-colored workout gear makes you want to use it," say Yoga For Bad People cofounders Heather Lilleston and Katelin Sisson. "Whether it's your clothes, meditation earplugs, shoes, jump rope, or other accessories, you will want to get up and put it on if it's fun."

Retreats Can Really Help

You can also consider the retreat approach. "When you get away and have a chance to actually absorb what a yoga class or meditation has to offer, then it's that much easier to keep up the good stuff when you return," say Lilleston and Sisson.

Retreats don't have to come with a million rules, though. "Yoga For Bad People teamed up with boutique hotel booking service Mr & Mrs Smith for two fun-loving wellness options. These health and fitness resorts offer wellness programs all year!"

Trainer Becca Capell makes a career out of giving health advice, so her best tip would be to pick a goal that's something you want to do. "Something you are passionate about and something that you are going to want to stick with even on your worst days," she says. "Don't put hard-and-fast restrictions on yourself that allow one bad day to have the power to make yourself a 'failure.' Try to add things instead of restrict. Add in 30 minutes of moderate activity each day, add at least one fruit and veggie a day, or add in eating whole grains for at least one meal instead of aiming to eliminating all sugar or losing 10 pounds."

As for what keeps Capell on track at home? "I love using iFit Coach (downloadable in Google Play or the App Store) for great workout ideas. Having a plan to follow keeps you accountable and pushes you more." If iFit Coach is not for you, give any one of these fitness apps a whirl.

Think Quality Over Quantity For Workouts

Lastly, to keep things manageable in the fitness department, think quality over quantity when it comes to your workouts. "If you are overcommitting yourself to too many types of workouts, you are setting yourself up for failure," warns Rachel Piskin, cofounder of Chaise Fitness. "By picking one or two types, you will be successful not only in accomplishing your resolutions, but you will also see greater long-lasting results. Once you feel successful at the workout, you will also be more excited to stay with your routine!"
