My love for sofas runs deep. I'm a true believer it's the centerpiece of a home to relax in and even reflect your own personal style. Discovering new brands that offer quality and affordable prices is my bread and butter. One name that has stuck out to me since its launch in 2020 is Albany Park.

If you've yet to see this ever-evolving couch company, then you're in the right place. I was first drawn to its hero product, the Kova Pit Sectional. After chatting with one of its founders and exploring more of its amazing silhouettes, I also fell in love with the brand's mission that's easy to get behind. It's here to offer minimal choice, solid comfort, affordable prices, and, of course, fast shipping.

"We want to make it super easy for people to anchor their homes with a cozy sofa."

Darryl and Jessica Sharpton, the founders of Albany Park, were prepared to take on the notoriously tough furniture industry, knowing ecommerce was the future. As the brand offers three couch silhouettes and lounge chairs in a number of colors and fabrics, there's no doubt that one that will fit your style. My favorite thing: the shipping won't take months. Unlike most traditional furniture retailers, these sofas are all modular and fit in boxes that can be shipped by UPS, and you won't have to wait weeks for surface freight.

All winning qualities in a great brand, right? If you're intrigued, we spoke with cofounder Darryl Sharpton to get all the details on how he successfully built Albany Park. Read on to learn about Sharpton's inspiration behind the brand, the role his family plays in it, and what you can expect next from the brand. Plus, you can even shop our favorite choices ahead, too.

POPSUGAR: What was your inspiration behind starting a furniture business?

Darryl Sharpton: I just kind of stumbled across the opportunity when I was in college to start selling sofas. I was buying brown microfiber couches from wholesale stores, photographing them, and selling them right out of my apartment. I was selling, selling, selling, and I just loved bringing people over, them sitting on the couch and finding them a piece they loved. Then I started playing professional football, but the excitement I got from selling sofas was always in my mind. . . . After I left the NFL, Jessica, my wife, said, "So what are we going to do? What's next?" And we decided to go make sofas because I wanted to make my own designs. We originally started selling our products on Amazon and Wayfair, which was a great way to break into ecommerce. We narrowed in on our three models that, no matter who you are, there's a choice for you. That's the whole premise behind Albany Park: we want to make it super easy for people to anchor their homes with a cozy sofa.

On Starting a Company and Establishing an Aesthetic

On Starting a Company and Establishing an Aesthetic

PS: What's been the toughest part of starting completely new in what is traditionally a tough industry?

DS: We were lucky enough to start in ecommerce, which is our whole model. I could just upload my products, and I sell them online, and that's all that was to it at first. I didn't have to go through the traditional channels of shaking hands with the regional furniture retailers. Just took pictures and uploaded them. The internet broke down all those barriers of entry. So, it was great timing to enter the business. Social media is a big part too. How to engage with the audience and really service people, their needs, all while building a customer base.

PS: You have beautiful imagery, which we think is key to selling furniture online. We love that you have your family in all the photos; it's so relatable. What inspired your brand aesthetic?

DS: That's a great point because that was one of the opportunities that I saw in the space. I saw that there weren't a lot of brands that were investing in photography and really paying attention. I would see huge companies, and they would just have blank, white background pictures, and I thought maybe something more relatable might appeal to people more. We throw a rug down. We do this thing with two accent pillows in the corner and a throw on the side. We like to put the lamp here. It looks like a normal person's home. It shows this is a sofa at an attainable level the whole family can love.

PS: What are the most important qualities that you think make a great sofa?

DS: Quality is really important. We have all of our products in our house. Literally, my dog, Coco, he runs on all this stuff, sits on everything. Our kids jump on everything. And that's exactly how we vet out the quality of products and the testing. We're like, "OK, this is a solid product that withstands kids." Or we'll say, "Hey, I think we need to upgrade this fabric because . . ." So, it's like our house is our testing ground. It gives me more confidence in what we're doing.

PS: The Kova Pit sofa is a favorite of our readers (and editors). What was the inspiration behind this big comfy piece?

DS: We wanted a deep sofa and something modular. There are a lot of these cloud-like silhouettes on the market now, but nothing was perfect and the right price, so we knew we had to make it. We wanted it to be that no-doubt, movie-night, chill-night sofa. Something where, if there's a guest that comes over to your house, they don't feel awkward sitting on it because it's just so comfy. It's the perfect all-around family sofa that actually looks good and will last. We also paid a lot of attention to the detail; we put the french seams on it to make it look more designer, elegant, and pretty. It has both feathers and a foam layer that increases its comfort. The whole design works really well.

PS: What is your favorite sofa of the line, and which one is your kids'?

DS: That's tough. Aesthetically it has to be the Park Sofa. I just love it. I love the design of it, the subtle curves. Just, everything has these sleek and cool curves; even the side pillow has great attention to detail. Definitely, my kids' favorite sofa is the Kova; we have two of them. We have one in the main family room and one in their playroom. They love it. I mean, they take all the cushions off. They make these huge fort pits. They're jumping on it. It's like an extra toy to them.

PS: Does the brand have any plans to expand into more home pieces?

DS: Yes, 2022 is going to be a big year for us. Without giving anything major away, I can give a couple teases. We'll be working on new silhouettes, maybe even in the chair department. We're also working on offering more fabric options.
