10 Things You're Tired of Hearing as a First-Generation, US-Born Latina
We know we don't have to tell you that being a first-generation, US-born Latina is a pretty cool thing — right now is a good time to thank your parents for all their sacrifice; we'll wait — but your amazingness often also comes with some annoying comments and questions. You know people might mean well sometimes when they ask things like, "But where is your accent?" And we get it if you still can't help but roll your eyes Anderson-Cooper-style at the questions you get over and over again. Read on and nod along to these annoying things you're most likely tired of hearing.
"So where did you learn to speak English?"
From my parents and school. Where did you learn how to speak English?
"You probably have like six siblings, right?"
Not all Latinos have huge families.
"But where are you 'from' from?"
If you're trying to ask what my Latino background is, there are better and more polite ways of asking.
"But you act so white!"
Is this ever an OK thing to say?! Answer: No!
"So I'm sure you must know the best place for authentic Mexican food."
Never mind the fact that I'm not even Mexican.
"But where's your accent?"
Nowhere, where is yours?
"So do you just eat rice and beans all the time?"
Is that the only Latino food you know?
"Wow, your parents actually speak English, too?"
I don't make comments about your parents' language skills.
"But you don't even look Latina."
I don't even know how to respond to that.
"You're actually pretty smart for a Latina."
Not a compliment. Enough said.
