This Homemade Salmon Popsicle Is the Perfect Summer Treat For Your Furry Friend

Cheshire & Wain shares an easy frozen summertime treat for your favorite feline friend. This seafood popsicle is a quick and easy way to make the most of leftovers while keeping your furry sidekick cool in the Summer heat.

I went overboard with my pet-owner responsibilities the other day — all in the name of research for an article I was writing for the South East London Journal about making ice lollies for pets! I took a special trip to the supermarket with a rather odd shopping list: 2 king prawns, a small fillet of salmon, 1 carrot, 1 apple, 1 bag of petit pois, some fancy cat food and some chicken stock. Then I spent a morning making all sorts of fishy concoctions under the watchful eye of Percy who kept trying to get his paws on the prawns.

At first, Percy wasn't sure when I presented him with a frozen stick of fish but once he'd given it a try he was chasing me around the house for more and making some hilarious cross-eyed facial expressions! Percy's favorite ice lolly was something I decided to call the Salmon Flake 99 on account of its juicy salmon flakes and king prawn "flake," but I also made others using wet cat food, (low salt) chicken stock and a tiny sprinkling of catnip. Salmon Popsicle

INGREDIENTS

    Raw salmon fillet Raw king prawns (with shells on) Grated carrot Water Your cat’s favourite dry food granules or treats

    INSTRUCTIONS

    1. Boil the prawns and salmon fillet in a little water for a few minutes until the salmon is opaque and the prawns are pink.

    2. Take the prawns and the salmon out reserving the water which is now nicely infused with the fishy goodness that will get your kitty salivating.

    3. Peel the prawns and put them in the bottom of an ice lolly mould

    4. Next put a layer of grated carrot in the mould

    5. Top with the flaked salmon and skin and a sprinkling of cat food or treats

    6. Fill with the fishy water and put the lid on the mould

    7. Place in the freezer to set

    Notes

    To avoid freezer burn make sure you take your frozen treats out of the freezer 15 minutes before you present them to your pet. Always check you are not feeding your cat or dog any ingredients that may be toxic or harmful. Stay away from chocolate, grapes, raisins and avocado, and don’t give dairy products to cats. If using chicken or fish stock, make sure it's a low salt variety.
