Rise Fans, It's Time to Listen to the Spring Awakening Soundtrack

The minds behind Friday Night Lights, Parenthood, and Hamilton have come together to create Rise, NBC's latest drama designed to make you cry on a weekly basis.

Based on a true story, Rise follows an ambitious teacher, Lou Mazzucchelli, who dedicates himself to instilling a love of theater in his students. His first step toward making that happen is to forego a performance of Grease in order to have the students put on a production of the more recent classic Spring Awakening instead.

In the first episode, we get some goosebump-inducing performances from the show's young leads, including Moana's Auli'i Cravalho. As the series progresses, you can expect to hear more songs from the hit Broadway musical Spring Awakening, and trust us, you are going to fall in love with the soundtrack (if you haven't already).

Spring Awakening is based on a 1891 German play, and it's a coming of age tale that took home the Tony for best musical in 2006. In Rise, Lou sums up the musical's appeal beautifully when he says:

"Why a show about sexually repressed teenagers coming of age in 19th-century Germany? Because just like you, they are dealing with intolerant parents, teachers that don't get it. These kids are you. Their story is your story."

The musical delves into serious topics including sexuality, teen pregnancy, and abuse. Some of the lyrics are definitely too mature for network TV. However, the story is already mirroring the lives of the show's young characters, and at its heart, Spring Awakening is about the power of the teenage voice. Not only is its message timely, it's also a perfect fit for a show about a group of high schoolers who are standing at the precipice of adulthood armed with big dreams and raw talent.

Before Rise delves too deep into the musical, it's time to for you to discover it for yourself. We've gathered all of the songs from Spring Awakening as sung by the original Broadway cast, which included Lea Michele and Jonathan Groff. Go ahead and listen to all of the stunning anthems while you wait for episode two, because Rise is about to make this Broadway play your latest musical obsession.
