Corey Arnold

For anyone who feels like they need a change or a new vacation destination in 2017, look no further than National Geographic's best photographs of 2016. The magazine released 52 photos capturing the essence of what people saw and loved this year.

Unlike other galleries from National Geographic, these photographs weren't necessarily part of a contest. Instead, each one was handpicked from "91 photographers, 107 stories, and 2,290,225 photographs."

Dive into some of our favorite photos from the list and don't be surprised if you immediately start thinking about where you want to travel in 2017.
