Meet "The Egg King," the TikTok Star Making Healthy, Glowing Skin Accessible

When was the last time you gave your skin-care routine a serious revamp? Like brushing your teeth, your skin-care process plays a huge role in keeping your body refreshed and healthy, but testing out products to find the perfect match for your skin isn't always fun — or affordable. Cue: The Egg King. For more than a year, TikTok star Young Yuh, known for his skin-care tips and signature bald head, has been testing out some of the wildest (and most mesmerizing) skin-care products so we don't have to.

"Long story short, I've always been into beauty in some aspects because I'm Korean and a lot of the older people — either from my church or just family friends, older brothers and sisters — they would show me their skin care," said Yuh, who excludes himself from the "cosmetically-gifted" beauty stars of TikTok and counts skin care as its own space. "They always had all these products. I'm like, 'Yo, what is this? Why is this so important?'"

"Don't strictly follow someone else's routine, it will never work out the way you want it to."

A former Renaissance man of the beauty scene, Yuh took inspiration from influencers like So Liah Yoo, Charlotte Cho, and Michelle Phan and decided to turn his passion into a full-time — now he has over 1.5 million TikTok subscribers. Hilarious and informative, Yuh's videos take a lighthearted approach to skin care, which makes taking care of your skin feel more accessible and more fun. See: the chlorophyll mask and how to treat redness after using pimple patches.

While Yuh's videos are entertaining, at the heart of each honest review is the fact that your skin care routine has to be personalized and giving in to the product recommendations of every beauty influencer you see isn't going to cut it. "Don't strictly follow someone else's routine, it will never work out the way you want it to, so just know that skin care is highly individualized," he said. "You don't have to have your life surrounded and saturated by skin care in order to do skin care. I'm just a normal dude and I just do skin care, so anyone can do it."

Ahead, check out some of The Egg King's top skin-care tips — and the steps you can skip.

Skin-Care Tips for Beginners

Up until recently, men have historically been excluded from the beauty and skin-care space in western culture. But Yuh's aim is to dismantle the idea that skin care is "boujee" or gendered, making healthy skin accessible for everyone. For his followers, this messaging has made a huge difference in their personal approach.

"A lot of guys will be like, 'Oh, hey, Young. We love how you're trying to make [skin care] more accessible, and make it more normal for guys to take care of their skin,' or 'I used to only use my bar of soap or my shampoo to wash my face, but now since I've actually been using a dedicated cleanser moisturizer, my skin actually feels a lot better and my people have noticed,'" he said.

Rather than taking advice from friends or going all in with every product you see, Yuh recommends easing into your new skin-care routine, focusing on hydration and skin health first. "Just start simple," Yuh said. "Just take it step by step, start with the cleanser moisturizer, and then see how your skin feels after just doing that, and adjust accordingly. From then on, skin care is a long-term game."

Skin-Care Skip: Rushing Into Your Routine

Whether it's microneedling or using gua sha crystals to reduce inflammation, it's easy to get caught up in big trends when beauty TikTok and influencers across social media can't stop buzzing about them. But just because a skin-care product is trending doesn't mean it's right for your face. Instead of jumping from level 1 to level 50 in your skin-care routine, take the time to get to know your skin, even if that means waiting a few months before you try that new serum or toner.

"Take your time with it and know that it's a trusted process," Yuh advised, wanting his younger viewers to learn from his mistakes. "Your skin will get better, you just have to take the time to learn [about] it. It's not going to get better overnight, it never has for anyone. Just take your time and you'll be happy."

Skin-Care Tips For Managing Acne

Sorry to break it to you, but there is no quick fix for acne. While some beauty influencers recommend different treatments, Yuh understands that everyone's skin is different and recommends focusing on acne prevention instead of trying to find a quick-fix solution. Above all, if you're facing problems with your skin, Yuh highly recommends consulting a dermatologist over taking the advice of a beauty influencer.

"It's way cheaper and faster in the long run for you to just go to a dermatologist and have them explain everything to you from the bottom up," he said. "Because at the end of the day, the information and tips that I give you will be bits and pieces . . . Prevention is so much cheaper than the solution."

His favorite pimple products include:

Pimple Patch: Hero Cosmetics Mighty Patch ($13)
Microdart Patch: ZitSticka Killa Kit ($29)
After Pimple Care: Hero Cosmetics Rescue Balm ($13) and the Hero Cosmetics Lightning Wand ($10)

Skin-Care Tip For Making the Most of Products

The skin-care section can be overwhelming if you don't know what you're looking for, which can result in a lot of impulse buys. As someone who tests beauty products all day, Yuh wants his viewers to know that more expensive products don't necessarily equate to better products. What really matters is using different techniques — like the cleanser whip method — to get the full benefits out of cheaper skin-care products. From there, pay attention to how your skin reacts and switch up your skin-care routine as needed.

Skin-Care Skip: Food-Based Trends

Taking care of your skin is about finding the right products that work for you, specifically, which can involve a lot of trial and error. But Yuh does have one skip recommendation: leave the food in the kitchen. As more influencers promote the use of halved grapes, ice cubes, raw potatoes, and ginger, remember that food is better in your stomach than on your face.

Skin-Care Skip: One-Size-Fits-All Exfoliating Routines

How often you should exfoliate depends on your skin and personal skin-care routine. Yuh recommends sticking to a chemical exfoliant whenever possible and being gentle with your skin, which can mean leaving the product on for less time than suggested on the packaging and building your way up to leaving it on longer. "Everyone's skin is so different and their progress on their skin strength is vastly different," Yuh said. "I just tell everyone just start slow and then build and add-on to your skin with what you can, but there's no one size fits all."

Skin-Care Tips For Using Face Masks

As TikTok's resident skin-care enthusiast, Yuh is known for his love of sheet masks. He even made a video layering on 100 of them at once. While nobody's going to layer on 100 sheet masks every day, Yuh does make a point of testing out products at different stages in his skin-care routine (which he does three to seven times per day!) to get a better idea of how a product might work for someone else's skin.

"For me, I go through so many products, and I built up my skin strength to a certain extent where I can throw anything at it and it's still completely fine," Yuh said. "I'm one of the few people who could probably use every exfoliating product and method in one day, every single day for a week and my skin will still be fine. But the thing people don't understand is I took years to slowly build up my skin like this."

After his thorough research, Yuh recommends avoiding peel-off masks and leaning towards sheet, clay, and cream masks with active ingredients like salicylic acid. If you're looking to add a few new masks to your cart, keep your eyes open for chemical exfoliating masks, hydrating masks, gel masks with bio-cellulose, and ingredients that promote nourished skin. His personal favorite is the Papa Recipe Sheet Mask ($17 for 10 masks).

Tips For Buying Skin-Care Essentials

When it comes to giving your beauty shelf a makeover, Yuh says you only need a few essential products: oil cleanser, foam cleanser, an exfoliant, toner, essence, moisturizer, a treatment product, eye cream, and sunscreen (Tip: remember to reapply). His personal favorites include:
