Why 1 of Dany's Dragons Is Even More Significant Because of Jon

"Eastwatch" is a pretty solid episode for dragon-loving Game of Thrones fans. (Wait, are there people who don't love dragons?) First, Drogon breathes even more fire on Daenerys's foes. Then, he and Jon have a very significant up-close-and-personal moment. While Drogon might be hogging the camera this season (and most seasons — CGI budget, anyone?), let's not forget that Dany has a total of three majestic dragons on her side. Earlier in the season, she tells Jon about the origins of two of their names. Did you know that all three are named after significant people in her life?

01
Drogon
HBO

Drogon

  • Dragon: Drogon
  • Named after: Khal Drogo, Daenerys's late husband and leader of the Dothraki.
  • Appearance: Drogon mostly has black scales, with some red ones on his back and neck. His wings are also black and red, and his eyes are red-orange. Possibly because he's the largest of the three dragons, he's usually Dany's first pick for battle.
02
Rhaegal
HBO

Rhaegal

  • Dragon: Rhaegal
  • Named after: Rhaegar Targaryen, Daenerys's eldest brother who died before the events of the show. Also important to note: he's Jon Snow's biological dad. Dany casually name drops him to Jon in "The Queen's Justice," and neither of them even realizes the truth!
  • Appearance: A majority of Rhaegal's scales are green, and he has some bronze ones under his neck and tail. His wings are yellow-orange and green.
03
Viserion
HBO

Viserion

  • Dragon: Viserion
  • Named after: Viserys Targaryen, the middle Targaryen child who wants the throne for himself but dies in the first season.
  • Appearance: Viserion has gold scales, which is fitting, considering his namesake gets molten gold dumped on his head. He also has cream-colored scales under his neck and tail, and his wings are red-orange and black.
