A Quick Rundown of All 6 of the Starks' Direwolves on Game of Thrones

In case you weren't aware, direwolves are a vital part of the mythology on Game of Thrones. Introduced all the way back in season one, each of the six Stark children are granted a wolf pup to care for: Robb has Greywind, Sansa has Lady, Arya has Nymeria, Bran has Summer, Rickon has Shaggydog, and Jon Snow has Ghost. After that, each direwolf plays an important role in their Stark's life in various ways: they're protectors, allies, and potential vessels for warging. By Game of Thrones' final season, only two of the six wolves remain alive, but they all have a special place in our hearts. Keep reading for a thorough refresher on the last time we saw each direwolf, with or without their beloved Stark.

Shaggydog
HBO via Giphy

Shaggydog

  • Owner: Rickon Stark
  • Status: Shaggydog is dead. At the beginning of season six, Rickon unfortunately falls into the hands of Ramsay Snow. As proof of Rickon's identity, his captor offers the direwolf's severed head.
02
Ghost
HBO via Giphy

Ghost

  • Owner: Jon Snow
  • Status: For the most part, Ghost has been absent on screen for a couple of seasons. But in season eight, Ghost is right in the thick of it all during the Battle of Winterfell. Though Ghost survives the grisly battle — and loses half of his ear in the process — he doesn't stay in Winterfell for long. Jon asks Tormund to take the direwolf with him when the Free Folk head back to their home further North. He leaves his long-time companion behind without so much as a "good boy," but at least we know the direwolf is safe.
03
Summer
HBO via Giphy

Summer

  • Owner: Brandon Stark
  • Status: Summer doesn't appear much in season six, but when he finally makes his appearance, it's to protect his Stark. When White Walkers come to attack the group in the weirwood tree, Summer attacks them back and sacrifices himself for Bran.
04
Nymeria
HBO via Giphy

Nymeria

  • Owner: Arya Stark
  • Status: Nymeria is separated from her pack and Arya way back in season one. Fearing that she will be put to death after attacking Joffrey, Arya releases her direwolf into the wild. The two meet up again as Arya travels through the Riverlands to Winterfell in the seventh season. Though Arya asks Nymeria to join her on her journey back home, Nymeria turns her back and leaves with her new pack. Arya looks at her former companion with a sad smile, saying, "That's not you." We don't see the direwolf again, but we presume she's happily living with the rest of her pack.
05
Grey Wind
HBO via Giphy

Grey Wind

  • Owner: Robb Stark
  • Status: Grey Wind is dead, along with owner Robb Stark. The two die during the infamous Red Wedding when Roose Bolton and the Freys attack the Stark forces. Robb is stabbed to death, and in a truly macabre move, Grey Wind's murderers attach his head to Robb's body.
06
Lady
HBO via Giphy

Lady

  • Owner: Sansa Stark
  • Status: Lady is the first Stark direwolf to die. Back in season one, Arya releases Nymeria in fear of her being killed for attacking Joffrey. To placate a demanding Cersei, Robert passes the command that Lady be executed in her place.
