That Insane Mix-Up and 9 Other Moments We'll Never Forget From the 2017 Oscars
This year will forever be the year that the wrong best picture winner was announced, but other things happened at the show, too! In fact, even before the cast and crew of La La Land mistakenly got up and accepted the award (shortly followed by the cast and crew of Moonlight), lots of funny, exciting, and sweet moments took place. While we're still reeling from all the winners, take a look at the show moments we won't soon forget!
Justin Timberlake's Performance
No one can work up a crowd like Justin Timberlake! He kicked off the show by performing his nominated song from Trolls, "Can't Stop the Feeling!" Everyone in the room was on their feet, including his old pal Ryan Gosling!
Jimmy Kimmel's Monologue
Kimmel gave a pitch-perfect opening monologue, balancing hilarious celebrity burns with some light political commentary. If there was any concern about Kimmel hosting the Oscars, he has truly proved himself a fantastic master of ceremonies.
Viola Davis's Speech
Viola Davis won for best supporting actress, eloquently delivering a memorable speech while tearing up and making the rest of the room cry along with her. Jimmy Kimmel even joked: "Viola Davis just got nominated for an Emmy for that speech."
The Starstruck Tourists
Feeling badly that tourists don't generally get to see any big stars, Kimmel surprised a whole busload of people by bringing them straight into the Oscars. They got to meet Ryan Gosling and Mahershala Ali, so obviously we should all be jealous.
This Lion King Moment
Because everyone is starving at the Oscars, Kimmel air-dropped treats to the audience a number of times throughout the show. The best part, though, was when he lifted Lion's Sunny Pawar in the air Lion King style to announce that more candy was on the way. Classic.
John Legend's La La Land Medley
John Legend performed a magical medley of "Audition" and "City of Stars" from La La Land, prompting us to wonder when we're going to get a full alternate soundtrack with just him singing.
Jimmy Kimmel Trolling Matt Damon
Jimmy Kimmel and Matt Damon have a longstanding (fake) feud, and the Oscars host took full advantage of the platform to make fun of his frenemy. He took several jabs at Damon over the course of the show, even trying to play him off the stage while he was presenting an award with Ben Affleck.
Emma Stone Winning Best Actress
Emma Stone took home the award for best actress, beating out fierce competitors including the Oscars queen herself, Meryl Streep. Her acceptance speech was humble and sweet, and honestly, we almost thought she was going to hyperventilate. Oh, and the way she called out costar/friend Ryan Gosling? Adorable.
Barry Jenkins's Acceptance Speech
Jenkins and Tarell Alvin McCraney won best adapted screenplay for Moonlight, and Jenkins made some particularly poignant remarks about feeling included: "All you people out there who feel like there is no mirror for you . . . we will not forget you."
The Best Picture Winner Fiasco
In a twist straight out of the movies, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway read the wrong best picture winner. The filmmakers behind La La Land nearly made it through their entire acceptance speech by the time Jimmy Kimmel came out and broke the news that Moonlight was the real winner. It was definitely the night's most shocking moment!
