Here's When and How to Watch the Next US World Cup Game

The FIFA Women's World Cup officially kicked off on July 20, and it's time to get excited. Brushing up on your soccer lingo and rules so you can explain what offside means to your friends? As the USWNT charges their way through the 2023 Women's World Cup as the defending champions, a lot of people — soccer fans and otherwise — are getting psyched. After all, women's sports are hotter than ever, and another World Cup win could be record-breaking big.

Luckily, you have plenty of time to watch the players of the USWNT shine. The monthlong tournament has already kicked off with the group round, which gave us three chances to see the team play right off the bat. After that, the knockout round begins, and the USWNT's World Cup schedule will depend on how they play. (Good news: if history is any indication, they'll do pretty damn well — and an astrologer agrees.)

The only downside, really, is that since the tournament is being played on the other side of the world, US-based fans are in for some early mornings . . . or late nights. (There are already some great memes circulating about prepping for the 3 a.m. wakeup calls.)

The next US World Cup game will be Sunday, Aug. 6, at 6 a.m. ET. Their opponent is TBD.

The World Cup tournament format started with a "group stage" in which the 32 qualifying teams are seeded into groups of four. In these groups, the teams play round-robin style, so they go against every other team in their group. During this stage, no one is immediately eliminated.

The USWNT was in Group E, playing against Vietnam, Portugal, and the Netherlands (the team that the US beat to win the 2019 Women's World Cup). Here are the results from the US group-stage games:

The USWNT advanced from the group stage to move into the "knockout round" (with 16 teams total), which starts Aug. 5. During this stage, a team is eliminated from the tournament if they lose. Their first knockout round game will be:

After the knockout round, the quarterfinals will be played between Aug. 10-12. Then the semifinals will be played from Aug. 15-16. The third-place match will happen Aug. 19 in Brisbane, and the finals are planned for Aug. 20 in Sydney.
