8 Reasons Maggie Will Die on The Walking Dead's Tragic Season Finale

The countdown to the season six finale of The Walking Dead is officially on. You should brace yourself, as we might be in for the most heartbreaking episode of the series to date. We've already prepared for the impending arrival of Negan, the show's baddest villain yet. Something that's a little harder to prepare for, though, is the death of one of our favorite characters — mostly because we're not quite sure who will die. For quite some time, we've had a feeling it would be Glenn; he is, after all, the person Negan kills in the comics.
Now, though, with a growing sense of dread, we're really starting to believe Maggie might be the one to go. Keep reading for all the evidence that's stacked up against her, then check out how the cast looks in real life.

Lauren Cohan's Quotes About the Finale Seem Particularly Charged

Listen, the whole cast seems pretty shaken up by the finale, but Lauren Cohan's quotes in Entertainment Weekly make it sound like she's having an especially hard time. "[Hearing] the word 'finale' gives me a physical reaction because it's the hardest day on set that I've ever had in my life . . . I never even imagined that as an actor you could have that experience. It's one of the most raw experiences that I think any of us have ever had. Andy talks about being late to work; I didn't want to go to work that day. It took a really, really long time for everybody to feel okay again after the finale, let's put it that way." See what we mean?

This Wouldn't Be the First Time the Show Has Strayed From the Comics

By now, it's pretty common knowledge that Negan kills Glenn in the comic book series. Even so, there have been plenty of instances in which the show has paved its own way. It's important to always remember that, while The Walking Dead TV show is based on the comics, it's ultimately a separate entity. Here's a quite notable example: in season four, the governor tragically beheads Herschel during an intense battle sequence at the prison. In the comic book series, though, it's actually Tyreese who meets this gruesome fate at the end of the Governor's blade.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Steven Yeun also touched on this separation. He explained, "We don't necessarily do what's in the comics . . . there's a clear divide in the way we tell a story on television, and the way that story is told in the comics, because it has to be." He hinted further, "There is something to be said about something being predictable. I'm sure there are iconic moments, but at the same time, we want to keep this show as fresh and alive as possible."

What's more, Yeun says in the interview that he's excited about Negan's arrival: "For me, for Negan to come into the show is, to say nothing less, f*cking awesome." Call us crazy, but we have a feeling this whole thing wouldn't be so awesome if Glenn's the one who dies.

Yeun has a serious point in his interview, though. Glenn is, by far, the most obvious pick for a major character death in the season finale. It wouldn't be shocking at all. For starters, we already sort of mourned Glenn when we thought he died at the hands of Nicholas. Plus, he does die at this spot in the comics. The show seems to be alluding to his death, too: Glenn's the one who finds all the polaroids of the bashed-in heads at the Savior compound. It's a little too on the nose.

We hate to say it, but everything is just going so well for Maggie right now. Her husband survives a harrowing scenario outside the walls of Alexandria, and she's been taking on more of a leadership role in the community. She even negotiates on behalf the crew with the leader of Hilltop, and she's expecting a baby with Glenn. We have to remember that this is a bleak, post-apocalyptic world. Things can't go too well for too long. All good fortune runs out eventually.

Even outside of Maggie's lucky streak of good fortune, there have been several key moments in recent episodes that seem to foreshadow danger. Back in the first half of season six, Maggie desperately wants to search for the then-missing Glenn, so much so that she tries to sneak out of Alexandria to hunt him down. Aaron intercepts her, cautioning that it's really not safe for her to go outside the walls of Alexandria.

Even more telling is Carol's adamant opposition against Maggie joining in on the Savior compound raid. There's a particularly poignant moment where Carol expresses serious concern over Maggie leaving the safety of Alexandria. Rick, of course, responds, "It's her choice."

Not only did Cohan star in big-studio horror film The Boy, but she's also slated to play Martha Wayne in upcoming megahit Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It's clear she's carved out time to take on bigger roles on the bigger screen.

Update: Maggie actually gets a haircut in the penultimate episode of season 6, so that probably explains Cohan's hair change!
