Junior Begins His Wild College Journey in the "Grown-ish" Season 5 Trailer

Acclaimed dramedy "Grown-ish" is soon returning with season five, and we're already counting down the days. The college-set Freeform series — a spinoff of ABC's "Black-ish," which concluded its eight-season run earlier this year — is back with a whole new storyline and a lot of fresh faces this season.

While the show originally followed Zoey (Yara Shahidi), the eldest daughter of Rainbow (Tracee Ellis Ross) and Andre Johnson (Anthony Anderson), as she went off to college, the new graduate will share the spotlight with her onscreen brother Junior (played by Marcus Scribner) as he joins Cal U to begin his own higher-education journey.

Luca (Luka Sabbat), Jazz (Chlöe), Ana (Francia Raisa), Vivek (Jordan Buhat), and Nomi (Emily Arlook) also graduated last season, leaving many viewers wondering what will happen next in "Grown-ish." But the season five trailer, which arrived on July 6, finally sheds some light on where the show's plot is headed.

While Zoey and the gang enjoy post-graduation life, Junior and his crew arrive to mark a new beginning at Cal U. "Grown-ish" has always prioritized telling the story of an ensemble of young adults, as the writing deftly brings up relevant social issues surrounding racism, police brutality, and more. However, it's still unclear what direction season five will take.

When renewing "Grown-ish" for its fifth season, Freeform announced that this installment will see some creative changes, including "Black-ish" producer Zakiyyah Alexander and producer Courtney Lilly coming aboard as the new showrunners. But that's not the only crossover fans can look forward to. It's possible viewers may see some of the "Grown-ish" alum pop up for future episodes, too.

From its casting additions to its NSFW trailer, read on for all the details we know about "Grown-ish" season five.

"Grown-ish" Season 5 Plot

"Grown-ish" season four ended with the core youngsters graduating from college. Now that the original Cal U crew is out in the real world, we'll be following a mostly new group of young people through their formative years.

Ahead of the season four finale, the show added Marcus Scribner, who plays Zoey's little brother Junior on "Black-ish," as a series regular. In an interview with TVLine, showrunners Alexander and Lilly shared the plotline of the upcoming season, saying, "For season five, we're excited to dive deeper into the storylines of Zoey, Aaron, and Doug in their post-grad adventures and welcome a new dynamic class to Cal-U, including Junior."

In addition to Shahidi and Scribner, the show has locked in Trevor Jackson (who plays Zoey's love interest, Aaron) and Diggy Simmons (who plays Dough) for season five. However, fans will not be seeing longtime series regulars Francia Raísa (Ana), Chloe Bailey (Jazz), Halle Bailey (Sky), Emily Arlook (Nomi), Luka Sabbat (Luca), and Jordan Buhat (Vivek) return.

Instead, season five of "Grown-ish" will introduce several new faces, including singer Justine Skye, model Slick Woods, Tara Raani, Amelie Zilber, Ceyair Wright, and Matthew Sato. Daniella Perkins will also return to reprise her role as Kiela, Luca's younger sister.

The good news is there's always room for the original characters to reprise their beloved roles. "Francia, Emily, Chloe, Halle, Luka, and Jordan will always be a part of the -ish' family. This new season isn't a goodbye, we are just expanding the world; there will always be an open door for them to return," showrunners Alexander and Lilly told TVLine.

It'll be interesting to see which "Black-ish" character (aside from Scribner) will surprise fans with an appearance in season five now that the original series has wrapped up.
