Why You Won't See Sia Without Her Wig — Even at an Oscars Afterparty

Sia's bold wigs have become almost as famous as the talented singer herself. She's rarely seen without one, and last night's Oscars Vanity Fair afterparty was no exception. The pop star wore a bluntly cut wig under a hat, completely hiding her face.

Many people wonder why Sia chooses to hide her face under such massive headpieces. She's discussed it a few times in interviews, but mostly, it's because Sia wants to live her daily life somewhat anonymously. In 2013, she penned an "Antifame Manifesto" for Billboard explaining why she doesn't enjoy fame.

The singer hasn't always hidden her face, though. In the beginning of her career, Sia performed without a wig, but the attention and pressure got to her. The artist discussed the negative impact fame had on her during a Carpool Karaoke with James Corden. "I was a singer for 10 or 11 years to mediocre success," she explained. "I was an alcoholic and a drug addict, and I sobered up and I decided I didn't want to be an artist anymore because I was starting to get a little bit famous and it was destabilizing in some way."

She also told The New York Times in 2014 about a horrible encounter where a fan interrupted a very sensitive and personal conversation she was having with a friend. "Once, as my friend was telling me they had cancer, someone came up and asked, in the middle of the conversation, if they could take a photograph with me. You get me? That's enough, right?"

The singer decided that mystery was one of the things missing from pop music and started to perform exclusively in wigs. Although she takes them off once cameras are no longer around, nearly all of her public appearances include a wig. The one thing we can't figure out? How she can see under those thick tufts of hair.
