Before I got pregnant, my beauty routine was anything but organic. Highlighting my hair was a monthly ritual (since age 14, mind you), aerosol hair spray was my BFF, and I wouldn't be caught dead leaving the house without a fresh coat of my beloved Chanel foundation. Then I found out I was having a baby and it was almost like a switch flipped. I suddenly started to question everything that was in my makeup bag and how artificial ingredients could affect my bun in the oven. So, in addition to giving up caffeine, alcohol, and my fave skinny jeans, I also traded in all of my makeup, nail polish, and lotions for more natural brands.

Almost two years later, while I can happily report that my highlights are back (oh, how I missed them!), I'm also still benefitting from some of the gentler, natural beauty products I discovered during my pregnancy. Keep reading to learn more about the beauty products that got me through pregnancy.

Moisturizer

Moisturizer

Pregnant or not, I've always needed a heavy-duty moisturizer for my superdry skin. It took me a while to find a natural product that provides long-lasting hydration, but once I discovered First Aid Beauty's Ultra Repair Cream ($30), my skin immediately reaped the benefits. The formula is free of fragrance, parabens, sulfates, and phthalates, and it soothes my often chapped hands and elbows better than any other product I've tried. While the lotion looks thick at first glance, it absorbs quickly with no greasy residue. I even use it on my face before bed. Needless to say, this is one multipurpose beauty product that has risen above all the others I used prebaby.

Nail Polish

Nail Polish

I'm not going to lie: giving up weekly manicures during pregnancy was one of the hardest beauty sacrifices I had to make. Although trips to the nail salon are safe for pregnant women, my heightened sense of smell made my nail maintenance almost unbearable. So I decided to try my hand at a DIY mani using Zoya Nail Polish ($4). Zoya is a five-free polish, meaning there's no formaldehyde, formaldehyde resin, toluene, dibutyl phthalate, or camphor. I've also found that these lacquers are more hydrating on my nails. While I'm back to enjoying my appointments at the nail salon down the block, I now bring my Zoya polish with me.

Hand Soap

Along with becoming a chemical-phobe during pregnancy, my germaphobe meter went way up, too. Have you ever gotten sick while pregnant? Not fun. Let's just say my hand-washing habits went from "often" to "OCD." But Mrs. Meyer's Clean Day hand soaps ($4) are gentle, smell delicious, and look really cute on the bathroom sink. The ingredients are at least 98 percent naturally derived and paraben-free, making them totally safe if you have a little one on the way.

Lipstick

Lipstick

Have you ever noticed an artificial taste in some of your favorite lipsticks? Well, in an effort to keep my pretty pink pout without harsh chemicals during pregnancy, I turned to Korres. Korres products are all made with natural ingredients, and the brand's Mango Butter Lipstick ($18) is good enough to eat. The mango butter leaves lips smooth and moisturized, and the color is pretty and sheer, with high shine to boot. And there's no weird taste. I call that a win-win!

Tummy Rub

Tummy Rub

I gained about 45 pounds during my pregnancy, but miraculously, I don't have any stretch marks. Maybe I should thank genetics, or maybe it was my ritualistic use of Mama Mio's Tummy Rub Butter ($36). I originally started using the cream because as my belly expanded, the skin around my stomach was extremely itchy. Since Mama Mio has a "No Nasties" policy — meaning it's created without parabens, petrolatum, synthetic fragrance colourants, glycols, or phthalates — I decided to give it a try. The first thing I noticed was a fresh, sweet scent, thanks to organic rose hip and coconut oils. Then, my itchiness subsided, and I was hooked. And due to my lack of stretch marks, you can bet I'll be stocking up on this organic and antioxidant-infused lotion when I'm ready for baby number two.

Eye Shadow

Eye Shadow

Bare Minerals makeup was a savior to my beauty routine during pregnancy, and today I'm still using the brand's Ready Eyeshadow 2.0 ($20). The eye shadow palette offers two vivid, pigment-packed colors without using any parabens, binders, fillers, or harsh chemicals. One quick swipe of these shadows will provide a healthy coat of color that lasts up to 12 hours. Rarely a day goes by without someone complimenting my eye makeup, even though I'm usually applying it while holding my almost 2-year-old at the same time. (It has become somewhat of a morning routine.)
