MAC Is Doing Lipsticks Like It's Never Done Before

When it comes to bold lipsticks (especially all things red), MAC dominates. As a longtime Ruby Woo wearer, I have to say that this new makeup collaboration is primed to replace my favorite crimson shade. French fashion designer Giambattista Valli has created five new matte shades that range from fair pink to vampy aubergine. Plus one high-gloss companion product that immediately amps up the shades from three o'clock meeting to disco dance party. "The biggest revolution you can do on your style is really changing the color of your lips," Valli said. "You can be today like this, tonight different, tomorrow morning another thing then after lunch another one." We'll take a whole set of six, please.

All the shades were inspired by fabric swatches in the Giambattista Valli fashion vault. Valli wanted to create a diverse range of colors that would reflect his design aesthetic: floral hues and standout textures. "The texture is matte because it really gives you something graphic and modern. It's good for the daytime, but for the party you're going to wear glossy," he said. "It's like the cocktail dress, you can wear it with flats during the day to the office and then you can change the shoes like you can do with the glossy, do it more fun."

With this collection, MAC is doing something completely new — colored packaging. Each tube is a metallic reflection of the bullet within. Yes, this lipstick quintet is going to be a MAC collector's item. "I'm somebody that loves practical things for women, beautiful, but at the same time practical," Valli explained. "I think its much more comfortable to check in your bag and look right away at the colors. You carry two or three of them in your bag and right away you grab the one you need."
