Kat Graham wanted some peace and quiet for our interview — which I can appreciate. (After all, it makes transcribing a lot easier.) We were in the bustle of Wet N Wild's photo shoot, where Kat was being photographed to announce her big partnership with the Los Angeles brand. Right after the first question, she stopped the interview.

"Sorry, it's so loud. Can we go into the bathroom and do this interview?"

Kat led the way to the private bathroom at MILK Studios, where she had no shame sitting down on the commode while I hoisted myself up onto the bathroom counter. This was definitely a first in my book, but it showed how spunky the 25-year-old performer is.

We continued to chat about her favorite drugstore beauty buys, what's in her purse, and her inspirational advice.

Why Wet N Wild is true to who she is

Why Wet N Wild is true to who she is

Kat has always been a fan of Wet N Wild — she used the makeup in her video for "1991," before she signed with the cosmetics brand.

"I wanted to be a part of something with my fans — [it's a] brand that they could buy. I was always more attracted to those brands. I'm very close to my fans, and I want them to be a part of everything that I want to be a part of. They're funky, they're edgy, they're cool, they're accessible . . . I like to put myself in that category. I like being young, fun, and hip."

Learning tips from social media

Kat is all over social media — she's got a cumulative 3 million followers on Twitter and Instagram. Admitting she takes notes from people she follows and loves to learn new lash and eyebrow techniques, she warns her fans about going overboard with makeup.

"Sometimes with Instagram, the problem with a lot of makeup you see now is there's no balance. It's either completely natural or, like, crazy contoured. Listen, drag queens have done my makeup, and that's how I learned. My best friend is a drag queen. I understand it. But as a young girl or somebody that young girls are looking at, [I want them to know that] you can still be glamorous and still have your contouring and hyperpigmented looks but still look like yourself. I want my fans to be able to experiment and play with makeup without feeling like you have to be totally overdone."

What's in her bag

In terms of her favorite products, she shared some of her daily necessities in her bag.

"In my bag, I always have my organizer because I'm a super Virgo," said Kat. "I have my Wet N Wild Max Volume Plus mascara ($2-$5), which I am obsessed with — I love long and voluminous lashes, and this product enables me to get both at once. I also have my eyeliner and some Evian Water Spray ($21 for three) too, because sometimes all you need is to just refresh your face with a mist of water and you're back to where you started. And Retro Pink lipstick ($1) — I love hyperpigmented lips. I've done a lot of testing on the carpet with my little fashion experiments, so I love doing stuff like that."

Her insecurities, drugstore beauty, and staying healthy

Her insecurities, drugstore beauty, and staying healthy

Everyone deals with their own beauty woes, and although her complexion is clear in person, she was up-front about her insecurities. "I've got a lot of freckles and I usually don't mind them, but sometimes they're raging. And I break out a lot on my chin. That's why I drink a lot of water. I get sent a bunch of random skin stuff and I don't use it — I grew up with whatever's at Walgreens and Rite Aid."

When it comes to clear skin, Kat wants her fans to dive deeper into not only their physical health but their emotional health, too. "Health is the most important thing. What are you eating? Are you drinking enough water? Are you stressed out? Are you meditating? Keep your mind and your body totally healthy."

And her definition of beauty? "Beauty, to me, is your highest self projected out."
