Boxed Bob

The Cut: Boxed Bob

Celebrity Inspiration: Kerry Washington

Description: "This is a one-length bob that sits above the shoulders and features a square bang," said Justin Gesler, the lead hairstylist at NYC's Blackstones. It's blunt, boxy, and full of charisma.

Style It: "This look should ideally be styled straight," noted Gesler. "It can also be styled with a soft wave that sits close to the head." You'll definitely want a smoothing cream and a sturdy flat iron. We recommend Amika the Antidote Silk Wrap Styler ($150) and Tigi Catwalk Haute Iron Spray ($22).

Who It Works For: "This cut works well for oval and heart-shaped faces," said Gesler. "It's also good for those with all hair types that are comfortable with styling to keep it sleek."

Long With Angled Bangs

The Cut: Long With Angled Bangs

Celebrity Inspiration: Reese Witherspoon

Description: This long haircut puts an emphasis on side-swept bangs. "It's minimally layered chest-length hair with focus on a disconnected but angled bangs, so that it seamlessly blends into the rest of the hair," said Maciques.

Style It: "Blow-dry smooth with a large, natural boar-bristled brush having sprayed a volumizer throughout," said celebrity stylist Juan Carlos Maciques. Try Alterna Haircare Bamboo Volume 2-in-1 Volumizer ($25). "Quickly wrap a large barrel curling iron from below the ear down, but not through to the ends, to create a minimal bend in the hair. Take sections of hair, without perfect thought as to size, and alternate directions as you work your way around the head. You want it looking loose and relatively carefree."

Who It Works For: "This cut is perfect for heart-shaped faces to narrow the width at top and for camouflaging any facial asymmetry depending which side you part the hair toward," said Maciques. "It's also great for wavy hair."

Razored Rapunzel

The Cut: Razored Rapunzel

Celebrity Inspiration: Kim Kardashian

Description: This is sort of like a "modern-day Cher," noted Maciques. "It's long, below the waist, with razored, thinned ends, but it's not blunt. With a cut this long, it requires some softness on the bottom so it has movement and balances the heaviness of the length."

Style It: "Add some mousse for hold and texture, and loosely braid your hair into four sections," said Maciques. Try Bumble & Bumble Thickening Full Form Mousse ($31). "Divide from ear to ear, across the crown of your hair and from center front to back. Braid two sections from the front of the ear down and the next two from behind the ear down. Let dry and release." Note that for many of us, this sort of length requires extensions.

Who It Works For: Maciques said this cut is great for round or heart-shaped faces and for square jaw lines since it elongates and disguises hard lines.

Blended Lob With a Bang

The Cut: Blended Lob With a Bang

Celebrity Inspiration: Alexa Chung

Description: Alexa is sporting a slightly layered, blended lob with bangs. "It's cut at shoulder-length with long layers and with bangs falling just below the brow from outer corner to outer corner of the eyes," said Maciques.

Style It: "In order to give texture, apply a salt spray and blow-dry smooth. The spray also automatically gives the hair separation," advised Maciques. Try Captain Blankenship Mermaid Sea Salt Hair Spray ($24). "Apply a large barrel iron and literally bump the hair around the midshaft area to create bends throughout. It's about effortless, not overworked, hair."

Who It Works For: "This look is ideal for long face shapes and for prominent facial features since it camouflages and shortens," said Maciques.

Rock Star Pixie

The Cut: Rock Star Pixie

Celebrity Inspiration: Janelle Monáe

Description: This is a modern-day version of Mia Farrow's classic pixie, only this updated version feels ultra fresh and carefree. "It's kept soft by not blunting the perimeter of the hairline around the head, and the layers are slightly longer on top," noted Maciques.

Style It: "This haircut should always be kept smooth, whether straight or with slight body and movement," said Maciques. For styling, you'll want to keep a straightener and smoothing cream in your arsenal. Try Amika Polished Perfection Straightening Brush ($120) and Redken No Blow Dry Just Right Cream For Medium Hair ($24).

Who It Works For: Maciques said this cut is best for straight or slightly wavy hair textures. It also works with curly textures, but to achieve the same sort of style as Janelle, you'll need to do a lot of upkeep and styling. "This cut also exposes you completely, so it's best suited for oval and symmetrically shaped faces with proportionate features, as well as the confidence of a rock star."

Textured Midi Bob

Textured Midi Bob

The Cut: Shoulder-Grazing Bob

Celebrity Inspiration: Kendall Jenner

Description: "This is a midlength, or midi bob, that is slightly texturized at the ends and cut so the hair falls at just about the top of the shoulders," said celebrity stylist Laurie Heaps, who regularly works on Rowan Blanchard, Sabrina Carpenter, and Danielle Fishel. "You can see this texture stand out a bit more when looking at recent paparazzi photos of her hair straightened and flipped out at the ends."

Style It: "The large, loose waves give this cut body and soft movement," said Heaps. To re-create Kendall's romantic-meets-modern curls, reach for a jumbo curling iron, such as the Biosilk Titanium 1 1/4" Spring Iron ($80), to create that larger wave pattern. "Make sure to curl the hair away from the face, focusing on the ends for maximum volume in all the right places." Finish with a shine spray, such as Chi Rose Hip Oil Color Nurture Dry UV Protecting Oil ($17).

Who It Works For: The textured midi bob gives you the freedom to go short while still allowing you to easily grow your hair out again should you desire. "Shoulder-length hair is actually one of the few universal hairstyles that looks great on any face shape — it's truly flattering," said Heaps. One bit of advice, though: make sure your stylist considers the length of your neck when choosing the perfect length. The shorter your neck, the shorter your cut should be, Heaps noted.

The Modern Shag

The cut: The Modern Shag

What it looks like: "The key to getting a shag cut that looks cool and modern is to keep the layers longer in proportion to the length (otherwise it looks dated)," said Rodney Cutler, a Redken ambassador and Cutler salon owner.

What to ask for at the salon: "If you have thick hair, ask for lots of layers so to take out some of the weight," he explained. "If you have fine, straight hair, make sure the layers are a bit choppy and not too seamless in order to achieve the desired texture."

Styling tip: "The new and improved shag cuts look best styled a bit more polished," he added. "Hair should be smooth and healthy looking; however, avoid blow-drying with a round brush — you'll end up looking more soccer mom than supermodel.

"Whether you're wearing it straight or wavy, make sure the ends are straight. Then finish with a texturizing product. Redken Wind Blown 05 is great used all over for matte finish, and a product like Redken Rough Paste 12 can be used on ends for separation and definition."

What it looks like: According to Spoke & Weal founder Jon Reyman, this layered chop is best for women with naturally curly hair. Layers help curls air-dry in better placement.

What to ask for at the salon: "Ask your hairdresser for layers," Reyman noted. "Depending on your texture, ask your hairdresser to cut so that the curliest version of your cut will shrink up to your shoulders. The hair is about the texture, and not as much about the cut. Wear your hair frizzy, curly, and natural."

Styling tip: "Take advantage of doing nothing for once in your life," he joked. "Embrace what happens. Finish your look with cool makeup or an oversized sweater. Make sure to relish in how easy this is."

What it looks like: "This cut is for the woman who wants to look on trend but maintain her natural curl," said Matrix celebrity stylist Nick Stenson. "It's a short crop on highly textured hair to show off the face features."

Styling tip: "Apply Matrix Biolage R.A.W. Replenish Oil Mist to hair overnight as a treatment and wash out in the morning to keep it soft and manageable," he added.

What it looks like: "This cut is best suited for wavy to straight hair textures," said Butterfly Studio Salon senior stylist, Vanessa Fernandez. "It's a sweet yet sexy look approximately hitting at chin length (more or less) with added layers."

What to ask for at the salon: "At the salon, ask for subtle graduation and to keep the cut slightly A-line, meaning shorter in the back to front," she said. "Adding 90-degree layers will give you the movement you want. Ask for a wavy blow-dry and curling iron set to get this look."

Styling tip: "At home, style with a blow dryer and small brush, create bounce, and use a one-inch iron to lock in the waves," she explained. "Keep in mind all should be styled away from the base. Brush out and spray."

Medium-Length and Angled Bob

Medium-Length and Angled Bob

The Cut: Medium-Length Angled Bob

Celebrity Inspiration: Olivia Munn

Description: "This is such a cute, sexy look," says Michelle Forst Vincent, a celebrity stylist and the assistant director at George the Salon Chicago. She says that the cut is angled ever-so-slightly forward, which is how it "looks nice and lean on the edges." She also adds that texturizing the ends is a must if you want to re-create this look and that your stylist "should make sure she emphasizes the part so it looks super dramatic."

Style It: To re-create the same loose waves as Olivia Munn, curl medium-sized sections of hair with a 1-inch wand, such as the Beachwaver Pro ($199). After letting hair cool for a few minutes, break it apart with your fingers using a high-gloss serum, such as Davines Oi Oil ($23).

Who It Works For: "This is a great look for anyone that wants to keep some length and still be able to pull it back," notes Vincent. She recommends it for someone with round cheeks and high cheek bones. It also works well on oval, long, and round face shapes since it helps to strengthen the jaw line.

Long With Subtle Layers

The Cut: Long With Subtle Layers

Celebrity Inspiration: Margot Robbie

Description: This cut is very similar to Sara Sampaio's, proving that it's a versatile cut that suits a variety of hair textures and face shapes. The primary difference is that Margot Robbie's long layers start higher on the face and they're subtler. Again, your stylist should make sure the layers frame your face to better highlight your features.

Style It: To re-create Margot's beach waves, Maciques says to "apply a salt spray to damp hair, section by section, as you blow-dry the hair with a round, natural bristle brush. The spray itself expands the cuticle and has some tackiness to it, which automatically gives texture." Try Herbivore's Coconut + Sea Salt Beach Wave Hair Mist ($20). For additional texture, use a 1.5-inch curling iron to curl random, tiny sections throughout.

Who It Works For: "I recommend this look for round faces with thicker hair since it elongates and narrows out the face shape," advises Maciques.

The Buzz

The cut: The Buzz

Celebrity inspiration: Millie Bobby Brown

What it looks like: Millie Bobby Brown has given Sinéad O'Connor a run for her money with a modern update to the buzz. We tapped West Hollywood salon Helmet to see what owner and stylist Maria Prendergast had to say. "Though not for everybody, this look feels really fresh," she said. "When Millie wore this cut in Stranger Things, it felt really cool. Most people will go for a tamer version — think Michelle Williams — that's longer at the top and at the crown. It's more of a pixie cut." She says that color plays a big role in a cut at this length and suggests going blonder or brighter to keep the look feminine.

Styling tip: Keep the edges a little softer to maintain femininity.

Maintenance: "You're going to get it cut once a month to every six weeks with this look," Prendergast noted. "It's a cut with more maintenance, because it's going to grow. But it also looks very cute when it grows out and can easily turn the corner into a pixie cut."

What it looks like: Prendergast delves into this trend, calling it "a soft, fringey bang with an almost '70s vibe." It's the perfect light layer around the face and a great way for people who have done the long bob and want to transition into bangs that are light and wispy.

What to ask for at the salon: Ask your stylist for rounded bangs with slightly softer edges at your desired length. Also worth noting: requesting a length that is worn below the cheekbones makes this style extremely versatile.

Styling tip: Prendergast suggests blow-drying forward to avoid cowlicks and to finish ends off with a flat or round brush, depending on your desired look. She adds that it's great for pulling back into a messy bun and letting the feathered bangs do their thing.

Maintenance: Plan on this look being more maintenance depending on how much you want to keep them the same length. A wispier, softer bang will be less maintenance because it looks great parted in the middle or centered, she added.

The Long and Sleek Cut

The Cut: The Long and Sleek Cut

Celebrity inspiration: Bella Hadid

What it looks like: Stylist Marissa Perrault of The Hive L.A. indicates that this look, so reminiscent of Cher, is a testament to '60s trends. "This is a cut for someone that comes in and has long hair already," she said. It is dramatically long, hitting the mid back. It's the "the difference between hippie hair that's been forgotten and hippie hair that is polished," she added.

What to ask for at the salon: The length is super important to this cut, so Perrault recommends requesting that as little hair as possible gets chopped to maintain the perimeter.

Styling tip: To achieve a sleek and finished look, blow out with a paddle brush and apply oil and lightweight gel for memory. For shine and polish, finish with a flat iron and heat protectant.

Maintenance: This look requires more maintenance than you'd think. You'll need regular trims every six to eight weeks to keep those ends fresh and neat.
