Shay Mitchell on What It's Really Like Having to Look Perfect on Instagram

Shay Mitchell could tell you that curating a covetable Instagram feed, shooting the sh*t with Lucy Hale or John Stamos, and having a pretty little trophy collection from her role on Pretty Little Liars is cool and all, but she would like to make one thing clear: the path to self-love and acceptance has been long and hard.

You see, the Filipino actress wasn't always so confident. Growing up in Toronto, Mitchell noticed that her darker features looked far different from those of her classmates — a truth she worked diligently to hide. "When I was in high school, all my friends were blond with blue eyes, so to be more like them, I would dye my hair lighter, straighten it, wear contacts, and stay out of the sun so I wouldn't get any darker," Mitchell admitted in an interview with POPSUGAR. "Now, everything I do beauty-wise is to enhance what I was born with. So this is what I will say to younger girls: Being unique is beautiful — celebrate that. Be you; don't try to change."

Of course, she's not completely impervious to the fact that social media — and the pressure to look "perfect" that comes with it — makes this piece of advice especially difficult. "I realize there are a million different filters, and I would never lie about using the beauty filter on Instagram, but at the same time, it's important to remember that photos on social media are a highlight reel," Mitchell said. "That's not real life. I'm not taking photos when I feel sick and coughing all over the place. These are moments that are very curated and edited to perfection, so I know that when I look at photos. I just try to live my life and have the most fun in real life. IRL."

In that same spirit, Mitchell wants to make like The Real World and start getting real — about the beauty treatment she'll never do, her solitary travel rule, and a few brilliant tips she's picked up along the way.

"Apple cider vinegar is my do-it-all," Mitchell said. (You can score this one from Bragg on Amazon for a cool $7.) "I'll use it to clean and I'll also put it in my water with a lemon. I've used it before on blemishes, but honestly, only when I've needed to get creative. It's a lot safer to use proper skincare products than to put household ingredients on your skin. But it is great for cleaning your house."

Two words: coconut oil. "My mom and her sisters' hair and skin has always been amazing, and that's all they used," she said. "Now I use it everywhere — sometimes I'll do a DIY coconut oil hair mask or I'll put it on my skin and just sit in the sauna to let it sink in."

As for her go-to formulas? Mitchell said, "I'll use any kind from the grocery store, or there are a couple products I really love, like Kopari's Coconut Oil Melt ($28) is really great."

Her One Basic Rule of Travel

Like Katy Perry walking outside with a face mask, Mitchell DGAF about looking pretty on a flight. "I never, ever wear makeup on a plane," she explained. "I learned that one from all the times I would wear some trying to look cute on a flight, but then I'd land and I'd have a new buddy on my face. There's not the cleanest air on the plane, your skin is dehydrated, it's going through all these changes — it's a lot, so I take off every single piece of makeup and just go barefaced.

Shark Tank contestants, Mitchell is coming in to trump your winning idea. "I love that Biore's new strips are scented," she said of the brand's limited-edition Citrus Crush Pore Strips ($6), which are only available in-store. "It's genius, because obviously they go on your nose, so it makes sense to have something that smells good. But you know what'd be amazing? A lavender-scented pore strip. Wait [turns to Bioré's marketing director] — we should make that happen!"

How to Spot a Shay Mitchell Wig

Any time Mitchell's hair is short, think of it as a clue that it's fake. "I've never cut my hair short, but I'll play around with a bunch of different wig lengths and colors," she said. "I just have fun with it — beauty is supposed to be fun. One hairstylist was like, 'I loved your hair when it was short,' and I was like, 'No, it was just a wig!'"

"I love to play around with makeup, so sometimes people will comment on my will to try new trends or colors," Mitchell said. "I've gotten 'great lips!' on my favorite lip color from Buxom. They have a really great lip cream called Hot Toddy ($20) that I always keep in my bag. It's a natural lip color; it's just a little rosy."

The actress has a pretty little secret: she likes to watch people get fish pedicures. "I love watching it, but there's something about the whole thing that I just can't do myself," Mitchell said. "I've even dipped my toe in the water before and just freaked out — it scares me."
