Scheana Shay's Nails Have Entered the "Vanderpump Rules" Chat

Good morning and happy Thursday to everyone except Tom Sandoval and Raquel Leviss. (Sorry, but it needed to be said.) After watching (and rewatching) the "Vanderpump Rules" season 10 finale last night, it's safe to say I am unwell. (If you're completely lost regarding what I'm talking about, click here for a crash course on the latest "Pump Rules" drama.) I've been analyzing the events of the last few months in my group chats for weeks now, and although I know whose side I'm on, one unanswered question has continued to haunt me: did Scheana Shay punch Raquel Leviss?

Here's what we know: On March 1, Shay was in New York filming "Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen" with Leviss. At the same time, Ariana Madix came across an explicit video of Leviss and Sandoval on Sandoval's phone. Madix called Leviss to confront her, and when Shay asked Leviss what was going on, Leviss admitted to having an affair with Sandoval.

Later, Shay recounts that interaction with Leviss in the "Vanderpump Rules" season 10 finale, saying, "The other night, I had so much rage in me, I was so angry. I shoved [Raquel] so f*cking hard away from me. Then I ran back to my hotel room. I don't know if my f*cking nails scratched her or when I pushed her away from me she turned her head into the fence or the wall . . . but now she called Schwartz and she's like, 'Scheana punched me, she punched me!'"

Later, during a confessional, Shay says, "It is scientifically impossible for me to form an actual fist. All of my nails would break. If I make a fist this way, my thumb would break. My hands don't work like that. I'm not a puncher."

It all begs the question: is that true? Is it impossible to form a fist and punch someone with long nails? And also: if you were able to punch someone, would it be hard enough to leave a mark (which, according to TMZ, is what Leviss was alleging in a since-dropped restraining order), and would your nails stay intact?

As someone who happens to have marginally long natural nails, of course, I tried it for myself. (The fist, not the punching.) I could kind of make a fist, but it was uncomfortable. Plus, when I opened my hand, I had divots in my palm from where my nails had dug in. Shay's nails are much longer than mine, so in my own (not entirely professional) opinion, I think it would have been nearly impossible for her to form a fist secure enough to punch someone and leave a mark.

Celebrity nail artist Elle Gerstein agrees with me. "You cannot make a proper fist (for real damage) [with long nails] because you can't get your hand in a fist position to give you the power of the punch you need," she says. "You're not going to pack a powerful punch; you'll wind up b*tch slapping. If you're really trying to hurt somebody, it's not going to happen because you can't make a closed fist. Let's stop normalizing physical violence."

The above photo was taken the night of the alleged altercation. If you zoom in, you can see that it looks like Shay has a fresh acrylic set on. Her nails are a milky white and filed into a square shape. There is no visible grow-out, which leads us to Exhibit B.

Exhibit B: Scheana Shay's Nails on March 9

Although Shay's nails aren't visible in this photo that was posted to Instagram on March 9, there's an entire scene in the season 10 finale where you can see her manicure. Shay is wearing the same nail shape and color she was on March 1, which leads us to believe it's the same manicure. All of her nails are intact, and there aren't any visible breaks or cracks. Could she have gotten her nails done in the same exact color and shape after getting home from New York? It's possible, but is it probable? You'll have to decide for yourself.
