Lady Gaga Reacts to Her Historic Oscar Nominations: "I Just Burst Into Tears"

Nothing will stop Lady Gaga from a good night's rest, not even her Oscar nominations. The 32-year-old A Star Is Born lead made history on Jan. 22 as the first woman ever to be nominated for best actress and best original song. While the rest of the world celebrated these outstanding achievements in film, Gaga told The New York Times she was busy getting some shut-eye to prepare for her Las Vegas residency when the news broke.

"I've been trying to get some sleep because I'm on showbiz time," Gaga said. "I woke up around 8:30 and I didn't know anything about it." She eventually got in touch with her manager, who shared the good news, and Gaga "just burst into tears."

Not even the endless congratulatory texts could wake Gaga, who said she can sleep "through just about anything." However, she did cherish the messages she received, especially the ones from her family.

"These are not Oscar nominations for me, these are Oscar nominations for the Germanottas," she explained. "I come from an Italian-immigrant family, and this feels like a very big win for them. This film was a lot of hard work, and I wouldn't know that hard work if I didn't know the hard work of the lineage of my family."

Gaga is clear about the life-changing and emotional impact filming A Star Is Born had on her and costar Bradley Cooper. While fans are shocked Bradley did not receive a nomination for best director, Gaga is simply ecstatic about the Oscars recognition he has received so far.

"I don't register this film in my mind as a time in my life when I 'filmed a movie,'" Gaga revealed. "I register it as a time in my life when I became somebody else, and Bradley became someone else, and we lived those characters and fell in love." The characters feel "very much alive" to Gaga, and she believes "they always will."
