Which of Kim Kardashian's Weddings Was More Insane? An Investigation

When it comes to over-the-top celebrity relationships, no one does it better than Kim Kardashian and Kanye West. From their rollercoaster courtship to Kanye's jaw-dropping proposal, everything about them is cranked to 11. It should be obvious, then, that their May 2014 wedding was a lavish, blow-out affair. At this point, the only couple that can even come close to topping their Italian nuptials is maybe . . . Kim Kardashian and Kris Humphries? That's right — the August 2011 wedding that launched hundreds of 72-day jokes was also an insane, over-the-top affair. How do the two events stack up? Well, let's just say they're both a little fancier than Kim's $60 Las Vegas wedding was.

The Engagements

Kim and Kris: Kris's proposal to Kim wasn't exactly a surprise. He popped the question in Kim's bedroom by spelling out "Will you marry me?" in rose petals on the floor, and according to a a deposition given by one of the executive producers of Keeping Up With the Kardashians during their eventual divorce proceedings, Kim was totally "aware" of the proposal. Apparently she asked to reshoot the scene because she didn't like how she looked in the first take. Their engagement lasted just 90 days, because Kim wanted to look young in her wedding photos.

Kim and Kanye: About a year before they tied the knot, Kanye rented out San Francisco's AT&T Park to propose to Kim with a ring coincidentally the size of a baseball stadium (a 15-carat diamond ring from jeweler Lorraine Schwartz). The big surprise was done under the guise of a 33rd birthday celebration for Kim, so Kanye invited 100 of their closest friends and family to attend. Once she heard the 90-piece orchestra playing Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful," noticed the pyrotechnics, and saw the words "PLEEEASE MARRY MEEE!!!!" on the Jumbotron, it didn't take long for her to realize what was up.

The Wedding Locations

Kim and Kris: Their lavish August affair was held on the grounds of a vast, 10-plus-acre estate owned by Frank J. Caufield, a high-powered Silicon Valley executive in Montecito, CA. In addition to the beautiful grounds and a mansion designed by George Washington Smith, there are "various barns and outbuildings" scattered throughout the property that include "a guest house, staff quarters and manager's apartment, greenhouse, shade house, a car collector's garage, pool house, gymnasium." Perfect place for a high-profile Hollywood wedding, right?

Kim and Kanye: Their whirlwind wedding weekend spanned 552 miles and two countries, with the couple kicking off the party in Paris before flying all of their guests to a 16th-century-era fortress in Florence (pictured above) for the official ceremony (because it's the city where they conceived their daughter, North). Although they originally wanted their wedding to be held in the Palace of Versailles, their permission was denied. Fortunately they were able to host a party there the night before the ceremony (which they arrived to in a horse-drawn carriage, naturally).

The Guest Lists

The Guest Lists

Kim and Kris: A whopping 100 people had to be cut from the list due to fire code regulations, but eventually they narrowed it down to 400 names. The likes of Lindsay Lohan, Demi Lovato, Eva Longoria, Mario Lopez, Ryan Seacrest, Julianne Hough, Ciara, Serena Williams, and Vera Wang (who designed all three of Kim's dresses that evening) all scored an invite.

Kim and Kanye: While Chrissy Teigen, John Legend, and Jaden Smith (dressed in a white Batman suit) all showed up, it was the people who declined their wedding invites that made the most headlines: Beyoncé and Jay Z. There were rumors that Bey refused to attend because she isn't a fan of Kim or her reality show, but the wedding was scheduled for just a few weeks after the infamous elevator incident with Jay Z and Solange. It makes sense they wouldn't be up for such a high-profile shebang. Beyoncé did share an Instagram dedicated to the couple, though, writing, "Wishing you a lifetime of unconditional love. God bless your beautiful family."

The Ceremonies

The Ceremonies

Kim and Kris: Their 30-minute Christian ceremony (which started 37 minutes late) was presided over by Pastor Joel Johnson, who Kris has known since childhood. Although Kim and Kris told him that they'd neglected to complete premarital counseling, they agreed to a one-hour meeting with him before the big day to discuss a few things. "It was a meaningful conversation," he told Hollywoodlife.com after news of their divorce was made public. "I've known Kris a long time and gone into some deep places with him. I felt really good about the meeting. I felt what I experienced was genuine . . . So many people condemned the wedding before it happened saying it wouldn't last. But when I spoke to Kris, I knew where his heart was and I said I wanted to meet Kim personally. I was totally impressed with Kim."

Kim and Kanye: They exchanged vows with a beautiful flower wall serving as a dramatic backdrop, and had their close friend Rich Wilkerson Jr. serve as pastor. A wedding guest told People that "it went off without a hitch," and the pastor "acted like he does celebrity weddings every day." During the wedding, Andrea Bocelli serenaded the couple and their guests with a number of beautiful songs, including "Con te Partiré" as the bride walked down the aisle on the arm of Caitlyn Jenner.

The Bridal Parties

The Bridal Parties

Kim and Kris: Kim had sisters Khloé and Kourtney Kardashian (who shared maid of honor duties) and Kylie and Kendall Jenner by her side as bridesmaids on the big day, as well as Kris's sister, Kaela. Just like Kim, they all wore ivory Vera Wang gowns (which Kaela later trashed following her brother's divorce from Kim). Kris had his longtime friend Josh Ketroser for moral support as best man.

Kim and Kanye: For her third wedding, only Kim's sisters served as bridesmaids. Like her wedding to Kris, they all wore white dresses. As for Kanye, his initial choice of Jay Z as his best man fell through when Beyoncé nixed their attendance, so his longtime manager Don C stepped in instead.

The Reality TV Factor

The Reality TV Factor

Kim and Kris: Their two-part wedding special was featured prominently on KUWTK and was one of the most watched episodes in KUWTK history (both attracted a combined audience of 10.5 million viewers). In order for E! and KUWTK's production company to pull filming off at the wedding, they set up a temporary master control room inside the venue equipped with a bank of TV monitors. That way, they were able to watch all nine cameras' worth of footage that was shot that night. They also made sure most of the cameras were draped in white fabric during the actual ceremony, so they'd blend in easier.

Kim and Kanye: A grand total of zero E! cameras recorded the actual wedding ceremony. Kim noted the wedding itself would not be featured on Keeping Up With the Kardashians, but that they'd show "everything leading up to and after," and later share photos from the ceremony. "As much as we would love to share these memories, privacy is our main priority," she wrote. Kim and Kanye also banned guests from using cell phones during the ceremony and made them sign a non-disclosure agreement to keep the wedding's details under wraps.

The Dresses

The Dresses

Kim and Kris: Since Kim couldn't decide between three Vera Wang dresses, she wore them all (the grand total of which equaled $60,000, although the New York Post reported all were given to her free of charge). For her walk down the aisle she stepped into a voluminous princess dress, changed into a mermaid-style while cutting the cake, and finally, put on a silk gown for the rest of the evening.

Kim and Kanye: Kim made four total dress changes to celebrate getting married to Kanye. While in Paris, she wore three different dresses for the pre-wedding lunch, their rehearsal dinner, and her bachelorette party. Once in Italy, she donned the long-sleeved, lacy Givenchy gown for the main event, which was designed by close friend Riccardo Tisci (aka the man behind her infamous 2013 Met Gala look).

The Bling

The Bling

Kim and Kris: Overall, the reported cost of the borrowed jewelry Kim wore on her big day clocked in at $10 million. During her ceremony, Kim wore a sparkly headdress (worth $2.5 million), and a bracelet with two dangling letter K's that Kris custom designed. On top of that, Kim's diamond-encrusted wedding ring was an astounding $200,000, which fit nicely against her 20.5 carat, $2 million engagement ring.

Kim and Kanye: On top of the massive Lorraine Schwartz 15-carat engagement ring Kanye gifted her with, the earrings Kim wore held a very special meaning. At Kanye's 2013 New Year's concert, when he announced they were expecting their first child, she was wearing a pair of Martin Katz's Tobey diamond studs that Kanye had given her. She rocked the exact same pair on their special day, which feature two large diamonds surrounded by 100 smaller diamonds, all set in 18k white gold. Not too shabby!

The Receptions

The Receptions

Kim and Kris: The entire wedding had a black-and-white theme, which applied to everything from the decor to the cake to the guests' dress code. Thousands of white roses and floral arrangements were featured throughout the dimly-lit reception space in the Montecito mansion, and chandeliers hung from the ceiling. Rob Kardashian and Scott Disick smoked cigars at a table together, while Kris Jenner broke it down on the dance floor with Ciara. As the reception wore on, Kendall and Kylie Jenner changed out of their Vera Wang bridesmaids dresses into a matching pair of Juicy Couture jumpsuits that had "Team Hump" written on the back.

Kim and Kanye: You might say Kanye approached designing their reception with planner Sharon Sacks with an eye for detail. In lieu of place cards for guests, he hired a team of Italian stone masons to engrave each guest's name into a marble table. Then, an hour before the wedding started, he decided that the wooden bar that had been installed "looked like a bar from Texas," and sawed it in half. He had two pieces of wood nailed to the front of it and was finally satisfied, declaring, "Now it's art." Once the party actually started, he gave a 20-minute-long speech praising Kim and everyone in attendance, all of whom sat at the 224-foot marble table that was hoisted in by a crane and put on a special platform so they could properly see the breathtaking Florence skyline.

The Cakes

The Cakes

Kim and Kris: The eight-foot-tall marble-chocolate-chip cake Kim and Kris commissioned for their wedding ended up weighing nearly 600 pounds. Kris was noticeably unsure of how to go about cutting it, so Kim coached him through it.

Kim and Kanye: While dining at the 16th-century-era fortress, wedding guests enjoyed a seven-foot, seven-tier white cake with white icing and fruit layers crafted by Galateo Ricevimenti, who also catered the rest of their reception. Although photos from their reception are scarce, the late Vogue Italia Editor-in-Chief Franca Sozzani shared a photo from the big day on Instagram, and you can see the staggering cake towering in the background.

The Music

Kim and Kris: E! News reported the couple danced to a blend of "Angels" and "Let's' Stay Together" performed live by Robin Thicke. After that, Earth, Wind and Fire took the stage to bust out a bevy of hits, before a DJ finally took over.

Kim and Kanye: Since Lana Del Rey performed at their pre-wedding festivities in Paris (free of charge, by the way), the couple had John Legend perform a live rendition of "All of You" for their first dance. Afterwards, "These Arms of Mine" and "A Little Tenderness" by Otis Redding were played, followed by Kanye and Jay Z's "Otis" and Michael Jackson's "Rock With You."

The Gifts

The Gifts

Kim and Kris: Their wedding registry was expansive, totaling over $170,000 in luxury products. The most expensive item? A vase that goes for $7,500. The least expensive was a clock that cost $1,115, which was joined by items like crystal dinnerware, decorative statuettes, Hermès plates, and silver ice tongs.

E!

Kim and Kanye: Although an official wedding registry for the two was never disclosed, Kanye's wedding present to Kim was a five-figure painting he commissioned of her wearing only a g-string and a pair of Louboutins, with the phrase "My Queen Kim" down the left side of the canvas, and "Perfect
B*tch" on the right. It was done by the artist Bambi, whose manager revealed Kanye asked for "something regal but typically Kim."

Total Cost

Total Cost

Kim and Kris: Kim's second time at the altar cost around $6 million, according to wedding planner Sharon Sacks. The only saving grace is that E! News reportedly footed most of the bill in exchange for the exclusive rights to air the wedding special, and most of the other amenities were provided either free of charge or at heavy discount in exchange for exposure for the brands.

Kim and Kanye: The total cost of Kim and Kanye's wedding festivities varies heavily, but is estimated to be about $12 million. When you take into account their multiple-country celebration and the stone masons alone, it's not that surprising.
