Michael Keaton's Checklist For a Winning Acceptance Speech

Michael Keaton is experiencing a comeback with his film Birdman, which has earned him several nominations this season, a couple wins, and now, an Oscar nomination. When Keaton chatted with reporters at the Oscar Nominees Luncheon, he was complimented on his acceptance speeches so far (like his adorable one about his son), and Keaton talked about what goes through his head when he hears his name called as the winner and how he's crafted his speeches thus far.

Keaton said, "Honestly, it's really interesting what happens. A lot of stuff just gets tossed. There are just so many people to thank. I've been doing this a while now, so the list is longer and longer and longer. And sometimes you think, I just can't get to everyone. You're going to get sick of it, I'm sure, but the word grateful — I'm just going to keep saying it and saying it and saying it. I drop to my knees, if not literally, quite often."

Keaton also mentioned that his son chimes in: "My kid gets nervous and says, 'Dad, remember, you get kind of tangential. Keep it kind of focused.' And I think it's because there are a lot of things I want to say. So often what happens, I keep a basic idea of things that I think need to be said or I want to say, and I toss a lot of it and just go with how I feel. I didn't know that I would ever get a chance to thank my family. So I thought, who knows what's going to happen? So I want to get that done."
