Sparks Fly Between Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding in First Look at Their Holiday Rom-Com
It might be the start of a new year, but we're already feeling the holiday cheer thanks to Emilia Clarke and Henry Golding. In September, the two signed on to star in a Christmas-themed romance, Last Christmas. The film, set in London, will be directed by Paul Feig, whose previous work includes Bridesmaids, The Heat, Ghostbusters, and most recently, Golding's A Simple Favor. Other producers who will have a hand in the film are Jessie Henderson, David Livingstone, and Emma Thompson, the latter of whom also wrote the screenplay with the help of Bryony Kimmings. Actresses Rebecca Root, Thompson, and Michelle Yeoh will also star!
The film is expected to hit theaters on Nov. 15, and takes its name from Wham!'s hit single of the same name. "I'd met with George Michael. He was concerned about the homeless, which is a large part of this story," Thompson told The Daily Mail in January. "We spoke a lot about life and death, and there's a lot of that in this film as well." Although the movie won't be in the style of Broadway-musical-turned-big-screen-hit like Mamma Mia!, Thompson noted that the rom-com is "inspired by the songs and inspired by him."
As far as story goes, the film will take place in 2016, with Brexit and the election of Donald Trump in the background. "It's first and foremost a love story," Feig explained to The Daily Mail. "[It's] a chance to go against so much intolerance and see what a melting pot London, and the world, is." Clarke will play an elf working in a Christmas shop who is described as "not quite fully formed as an adult," while Tom (Golding) is "out of sync with the modern world," Golding told The Daily Mail. "I think he sees [Kate] as a bit of a lost soul and tries to bring her out of herself."
Some of the romantic (and chilly!) set photos have already given us a sneak peek at what to expect, but Golding also took it upon himself to share an official first-look photo of him and Clarke as their characters, Tom and Kate. "Mark my words, this one is going to be special," he captioned the Instagram post.
Clarke is known for playing the beloved Daenerys Targaryen in Game of Thrones, but now that the show is ending, it makes sense that she's looking to take on other projects. She recently portrayed Han Solo's childhood friend Qi'ra in Solo: A Star Wars Story, and it looks like she'll be expanding her acting repertoire with Last Christmas.
Golding is also doing rather well with breaking into the Hollywood scene. He's coming off a successful performance as Nick Young in Crazy Rich Asians, which was very well received. Golding also worked with Feig in the recent mystery thriller A Simple Favor as the character Sean Townsend.
As for Clarke and Golding's upcoming film, we're already wondering if it will be a little Love Actually-esque. It is a romance film that takes place in London around Christmas time, after all. And with Thompson, who played Karen in the first Love Actually film, as a screenwriter for the movie, there's sure to be a few similarities here and there. For now, we're just going to squeal in excitement over getting to see Clarke and Golding share the big screen together.
