The 5 Biggest Theories For the Identity of Star Wars' Supreme Leader Snoke

In a recent interview with Entertaintment Weekly, Andy Serkis, who plays Supreme Leader Snoke, asserted that Snoke is a new addition to the Star Wars franchise. "He's a new character in this universe. It is very much a newly-introduced character. He's aware of what's gone on, in the respect that he has been around and is aware of prior events. I think it'd be fair to say that he is aware of the past to a great degree."

Of course, Serkis's word is very different from, say, J.J. Abrams'. It's totally possible Serkis has been misinformed about the true identity of his character or that he hasn't been informed at all. So, with that, let's look at other options.

One theory that's gaining a lot of steam is that Snoke is Darth Plagueis the Wise. In Star Wars: Episode III — Revenge of the Sith, Palpatine tells Anakin the story of the fallen figure. Palpatine says, "Darth Plagueis was a Dark Lord of the Sith so powerful and so wise, he could use the Force to influence the midi-chlorians to create life. He had such a knowledge of the Dark Side, he could even keep the ones he cared about from dying."

It's true, Palpatine goes on to say that Plagueis died. Even so, it's possible he faked his death. Or, given his extensive knowledge of the Dark Side, it's even more plausible he figured out a way to wrench himself from the grips of death. There's tons of evidence to support the theory, including a reasonable explanation, matching appearances, similar music, and more.

This theory, courtesy of MoviePilot, is certainly out of left field, but it's also not a total shot in the dark. Huge logic points include hints about his survival in The Force Awakens, homages to his gear, his survival in the extended Star Wars universe, and more.

There are some big holes in the theory, though. For one, Boba Fett has never been labeled as a Force-sensitive character, and Snoke definitely is. Also, Snoke is allegedly 7 feet tall, much taller than Boba Fett appears in the movies. Finally, many are convinced that he straight-up could not possibly have survived ingestion by Sarlacc.

One INSANE Reddit theory has left a lot of Star Wars fans scratching their heads: that Jar Jar Binks is well-trained in the ways of the Force and that he's a coconspirator with the Sith. There's actually so much evidence to suggest that this theory is viable, it's kind of scary. We could try to break down the theory, but we really suggest you read the whole thing yourself.

As we've seen plenty of times in the movies, the death of a Force-sensitive individual does not necessarily mean the end. The soul, or essence, of these powerful individuals remains, and although they cannot participate in the world physically, they can still interact with the living. Is it possible Snoke is the Force ghost of a powerful figure we've seen before? For instance: Palpatine/Darth Sidious, or even Darth Vader himself.

The big problem is that Force ghosts are in a sort of "in-between" state, and they can't stay there for long. It would be hard for a Force ghost to rise to such power. And furthermore, it would make for a pretty lame reveal if Snoke was a villain we've already seen defeated.
