8 Shows to Watch If You're Obsessed With The Handmaid's Tale

Hulu's dystopian series The Handmaid's Tale has presented a brand-new nightmare for TV audiences. Based on Margaret Atwood's book of the same name, the series follows Offred, a woman forced into serving as a maid/surrogate mother to a wealthy couple after America's political system is turned on its head. Hulu has already renewed the show for season two, but if you want to dive into a similar series during the hiatus, we have some suggestions.

The Leftovers

Though much different than Offred's society, the world in The Leftovers is, at times, just as horrifying. Based on the book by Tom Perrotta, this HBO series follows Kevin (Justin Theroux) and those in his community as they grapple with the fact that two percent of the world's population has disappeared without a trace.

The Lottery

OK, Lifetime's one-season series isn't nearly as good as The Handmaid's Tale, but it's still worth a watch. The series is also set in the near-future, and women have become infertile. It's up to a team of scientists to keep the population alive. They are able to successfully fertilize 100 eggs, holding a lottery to decide which women will attempt to carry the babies to term. The show is unfortunately not available to watch online.

Dollhouse

After Buffy the Vampire Slayer but before The Avengers, Joss Whedon created a little sci-fi show called Dollhouse. The show starred Eliza Dushku as a vessel who takes on different personalities and identities to please clients. Though it only lasted two seasons, Dollhouse makes some brilliant commentary on how society treats women's bodies and the true worth of a human life.

Ah, another hit series led by a strong woman! Tatiana Maslany (finally) won an Emmy for her many, many roles in this sci-fi drama. She plays several clones, many of whom are infertile. While the series doesn't revolve around the characters' abilities to carry (or not to carry) a child, it is an important thread throughout the seasons.

Black Mirror

While the society in The Handmaid's Tale almost seems to have gone back in time when it comes to technology, the world built in Black Mirror has skipped ahead. There are three seasons (between three and six episodes each) on Netflix, and each tells a story more horrifying than the last. You'll have to look hard to find a happy ending in Black Mirror, but if you're already watching The Handmaid's Tale, you're no doubt used to bleak storytelling.
