7 Netflix Hacks You Won't Believe You've Survived This Long Without

Despite the fact that everyone uses it, Netflix is not exactly the most user-friendly. With thousands of movies and TV shows available, it makes sense that finding the perfect thing to watch can be pretty overwhelming (especially with all of those secret movie categories!). If you want to make the most of your monthly streaming experience, here are some tips to find the shows and movies you want without losing your patience (or your mind) in the process.

Sort Selections by Year

Sort Selections by Year

Rather than wading through all of the choices listed under Popular on Netflix or Trending Now, sorting selections by year will totally change your world. After picking a category and a genre, select the icon with the four dots below your user icon in the top right corner of the screen. By expanding the Suggestions For You drop-down menu, you can then sort by Year Released and life will become so much easier. You can also sort by alphabetical order or reverse alphabetical order this way as well.

02
Search "Netflix" to Find All the Netflix Originals

Search "Netflix" to Find All the Netflix Originals

Though it may seem obvious, the best way to find all of Netflix's original programming is to use the search bar. Click on the magnifying glass icon, type in "Netflix," and you're well on your way to all of Netflix's original movies and TV shows.

03
Use Category Codes to Browse Genres

Use Category Codes to Browse Genres

Feel like your homepage recommendations always show the same content? Netflix actually has 76,000 different categories to sort all of its content, and using category codes will help you unlock a lot of the content you might be missing out on. Using Netflix's category codes, you can browse very specific categories (such as Deep Sea Horror Movies) by typing the following URL into your web address bar and replacing "code" with the specific genre code number you want to browse: http://www.netflix.com/browse/genre/code. Clear Out Your "Continue Watching" Queue

If you know you're never going to finish that random documentary you started one Sunday morning five months ago, you can remove it from your queue to make navigation much easier. Go to Account, and then under My Profiles, you'll see an option for Viewing Activity. Just click the "X" on anything you'd rather eliminate from your queue, and you'll be able to find the things you actually want to watch more easily. If you share your account, you can also hide any embarrassing binge-watching sessions this way.

05
Customize Your Subtitles

Customize Your Subtitles

If you are a foreign film buff or simply struggle to understand any foreign accents, you can customize your subtitles by changing the font, color, size, and more. Go to Account, choose your profile, and select Subtitle Appearance. Then you can adjust your subtitles depending on whatever program you're watching.

06
Request a Movie or Show

Request a Movie or Show

Can't find exactly what you're looking for? Netflix is constantly adding to its content, and you can put in a request if you want to increase the chances of your favorite flick getting added to the site. Just go to the Help Center and select Request TV shows or movies. You can request up to three titles at a time, and if your request does end up getting added to the site, you'll receive an email notification when the program is available to stream.

07
Rate Everything to Get the Best Recommendations

Rate Everything to Get the Best Recommendations

Netflix's suggested programming is all based on complicated algorithms, but you can allow your Netflix profile to get to know you as well as possible by rating every program you watch. Next to the + My List button on the home screen of every program is the option to give the show or movie a "thumbs-up" or "thumbs-down." The more ratings you give, the more likely your homepage will be filled with TV shows and movies that actually appeal to you.
