This Is Where We Leave Each Character at the End of On Becoming a God in Central Florida

On Becoming a God in Central Florida is one of the best new shows of 2019. Kirsten Dunst stars as Krystal Stubbs, a suddenly single mom who finds herself in dire financial straits and subsequently gets embroiled in a pyramid scheme called Founders American Merchandise (FAM).

Along the way, she starts a mutually beneficial relationship with Cody (Théodore Pellerin), a midlevel cog at the company, and manages to draw the ire of the company's CEO and founder Obie Garbeau (Ted Levine). In the season finale, everything comes to a head — there's a kidnapping, a murder, and a new pet peacock. It all adds up to what should be a great second season next year. Showtime renewed the dark comedy back in September, so we look forward to watching more of Krystal, Cody, and the gang in 2020.

But here's where everyone finds themselves by the end of the season one finale.

Krystal Is Triumphant. Sort Of.
Showtime

Krystal Is Triumphant. Sort Of.

Krystal blackmails Obie with a threat of telling the police that he sent Roger (Kevin J. O'Connor) to kill her and her baby. In the end, she gets her Splashercize business at the newly renamed Krystal Waters in exchange for acting like FAM is the reason for it so Obie can use her as a success story — Krystal Waters is even called "a FAM water park." She and Cody are living semihappily ever after. For now.

If you're wondering why Krystal chooses herself over taking down Obie, well . . . that's really in character for her.

Creator Robert Funke told POPSUGAR, "It's tempting to assume this is a show about a woman attempting to topple a patriarchal system. And that's not Krystal . . . we're not writing about someone taking on a system, we're writing about someone thriving within a system. I think that's something kind of important to look at and to recognize a protagonist that has a challenge that is probably not going to end in her Erin Brockovich-style taking down of the bad guys."

Cody Steps Up
Showtime

Cody Steps Up

After accidentally shooting Roger (twice!), he comes through big time by pulling it together enough to bury Roger's body in Mimi's (Lois Smith) backyard. He then uses video of Roger's dead body to intimidate and scare Obie.

He knows Krystal doesn't love him, but this is really as good as it's going to get for Cody right now. Actor Pellerin told us that "Krystal finds comfort in having [Cody] around" and that that's enough for him right now.

Creator Matt Lutsky added, "I think there could be a really cynical read of their relationship from Krystal's perspective that she's just using him and he's just a tool for her, which is true, but I also think that in her circumstances, someone being a tool for her is a form of love and connection. There is at least one person there she can turn to, even if it's for cynical purposes."

Obie Vows Revenge
Showtime

Obie Vows Revenge

Krystal pulls one over on Obie with Roger's death, threatening to expose him if he doesn't give her what she wants. So he does, but he's not going to just roll over and die. He knows Krystal has family out there somewhere, and he wants to go after them.

Ernie and Bets Reconcile
Showtime

Ernie and Bets Reconcile

After Ernie (Mel Rodriguez) presents a fake family for the FAM gala, Bets (Beth Ditto) locks him out of the house because she realizes she enables him and it's time for tough love. He shows up the next day with a peacock because Bets has always wanted a peacock. It's very sweet and very Ernie, and at least maybe FAM hasn't ruined their family. It remains to be seen what becomes of them next season, but we're hopeful for Ernie, Bets, and their son.

Roger Goes Down
Showtime

Roger Goes Down

Poor Roger decides Obie has lost his way and that he's going to help Krystal, only to be accidentally shot by hapless Cody. So after being one of the most interesting characters in season one, Roger is now pushing up daisies in Mimi's backyard, which is a shame. But it should be fun when his body is found in season two.

Louise Shakes Her Maracas
Showtime

Louise Shakes Her Maracas

Louise (Sharon Lawrence) gives an enthusiastic performance to "Rhythm Is Gonna Get You" at the FAM telethon, but unfortunately, that's about all we see of her in the finale. She is an intriguing supporting character this season, with her weird purple womb birthing room, so hopefully we get to see more Louise in season two.

Judd and Melody Are on the Lam
Showtime

Judd and Melody Are on the Lam

Judd (John Earl Jelks) manages to escape with his daughter, but the fact that we see them nervously eating at a diner at the end of an episode means this can't be the end of that storyline. You know Obie and his cronies are going to be tracking them next season.

Season 2
Showtime

Season 2

What will season two be? Well, we're really not sure since it looks as though Krystal and Cody are operating fairly independently of FAM. But the creators aren't flying by the seat of their pants. They told us before season one even premiered that they have the idea for season two laid out and that "it's very good."

On Becoming a God in Central Florida should return in Summer/Fall 2020.
