Our Spidey Senses Are Tingling Wondering Who Olivia Wilde's Marvel Movie Will Be About

Olivia Wilde was recently announced as the director of a secret Marvel project at Sony, and we already have theories as to who the titular hero could be. Wilde tweeted a spider emoji in response to the news on Aug. 20, which immediately put us in the realm of the Spider-Verse. As seen in 2018's Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, Spider-Man isn't the only web-slinging hero around, and there's been a number of bad*ss women that have taken on the name Spider-Woman. Below are just six characters we think would pair excellently with the Booksmart director's style.

Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)
Amazon

Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew)

The most likely candidate is the original Spider-Woman, Jessica Drew. An assassin-turned-private-investigator, Jessica received her powers after being injected with a spider serum to save her life. These powers include superstrength, wall crawling, and venom blasts. Jessica's version of Spider-Woman has been around since the '70s, even having an animated TV show. She's slated to appear in the female-centric Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spinoff.

Silk (Cindy Moon)
Amazon

Silk (Cindy Moon)

A Korean-American superhero, Cindy Moon gained her powers through a radioactive spider bite the same day Peter Parker received his. On top of the same powers as Spider-Man, she also has a heightened spider sense and the ability to generate organic webbing. Wilde's film wouldn't be the first time Silk's been on screen; she was portrayed by Tiffany Espensen as a classmate of Peter Parker's (Tom Holland) in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Since there's been a Silk movie in development by Sony since 2018, Wilde may have been tapped as the director to move it forward. If not, you can at least expect to see Cindy in the female-centric Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse spinoff.

Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter)
Amazon

Spider-Woman (Julia Carpenter)

If a franchise is what Wilde has her sights set on, Julia Carpenter, aka the second Spider-Woman, is the way to go. As Spider-Woman, Julia was recruited by government agency The Commission and "accidentally" injected with a mixture of spider venoms and plant toxins. This gave her superhuman strength, speed, stamina, agility, and reflexes, as well as the ability to spin a "psi-web" of psionic energy. Besides Spider-Woman, she's also taken on the monikers of Arachne and Madame Web, so there's a lot of ground to cover with her story.

The Amazing Spider-Girl (May Parker)
Amazon

The Amazing Spider-Girl (May Parker)

It would be interesting to see a superpowered version of Booksmart, and Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson's teenage daughter May Parker would be the best fit for that. May inherited many of her abilities from her father and began developing powers around the age of 15. She becomes Spider-Girl to fight Normie Osborn, who's taken on the mantle of his father and grandfather as the Green Goblin.

Araña (Anya Corazon)
Amazon

Araña (Anya Corazon)

After being mortally wounded in a fight between The Spider Society and the Sisterhood of the Wasp, Anya Corazon is given a spider-shaped tattoo to save her life. The tattoo gives her spider-like powers, and she's then recruited by The Spider Society to be a hunter. Using the name Araña, she possesses the powers of organic web creation and shadow camouflage in her efforts against Wasp. Eventually, she gives up the hunting lifestyle and goes solo as the new Spider-Girl. Anya is half-Puerto Rican, half-Mexican, which is part of the reason she chose her nickname, Araña, as her superhero moniker.

Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy)
Amazon

Spider-Gwen (Gwen Stacy)

Fans will easily recognize Spider-Gwen since she was most recently voiced by Hailee Steinfeld in Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. In her world, she was bitten by a radioactive spider rather than Peter Parker. This leads to her eventual career as Spider-Woman. If you're thinking, "Damn, there sure are a lot of Spider-Women on this list," we haven't even scratched the surface! There are a total of 44 Spider-Women across the various realities in the Spider-Man universe and all of them have stories worthy of a film. We'll have to wait and see whose story Wilde is bringing to the big screen!
