"I've heard 'Hate Myself' is very relatable to a lot of people, but for me, it's this very specific feeling I get when I'm with someone — a friend or romantic partner or whoever — and they take the time to go quiet because they're dealing with something," dodie said. "It could be for a multitude of reasons. Maybe it's something I did, but even if it isn't, I start attacking myself because I'm convinced that I've done wrong and stepped wrong somewhere and I freak out and start acting weird. There is a lyric where I say, 'One will fold their arms, one will do the dance.' And I like that image of one person just being like, 'I'm quiet,' and then the other being like, 'What can I do to make it better?'"
