Wondering Who Sings That Haunting Song in American Horror Story's Season 9 Teaser?

There are still quite a few months to go until American Horror Story's ninth season, titled 1984, debuts on FX this Fall, so we need to figure out ways to keep ourselves busy in the meantime. In addition to obsessing over the new cast members — and mourning Evan Peters' unexpected departure — Ryan Murphy is keeping our interest piqued with the brand-new teaser, which dropped on April 10 and features the perfect, haunting song by rising pop star Billie Eilish.

The 1984 teaser is brief, and focuses on a young woman running through the woods at night in some '80s-era clothing (and teased-out hairstyle) as she's chased by a lumbering killer in a long black coat and boots, brandishing a butcher knife. The murderer also appears to have some gray (or blonde?) scraggly hair, and is wearing a hood to obscure their face. We don't see what happens to the girl in the teaser, or even find out if she'll be a major part of the actual season (or if this is just a cryptic promo), but we do know that Eilish's "Six Feet Under" is the song playing in the background.

At first the 2016 track might seem like an odd choice to use for footage of a woman running for her life since it's a slow, emotional ballad. But when you take a second to consider the lyrics, it makes a bit more sense:

"Help, I lost myself again
But I remember you
Don't come back, it won't end well
But I wish you'd tell me too
Our love is six feet under
I can't help but wonder
If our grave was watered by the rain
Would roses bloom?
Could roses bloom

Lyrics about a doomed relationship? Allusions to death, burying the past, graves, and drowning? All are suitably eerie nods to themes in classic slasher films, especially Friday the 13th, which follows a killer going after teens at a Summer camp in the woods and includes a storyline about a drowning. Watch the AHS: 1984 teaser ahead, and then keep scrolling to hear the full version of Eilish's "Six Feet Under."
