Barbershop Offers Discounts For Kids Who Read Aloud

Every Barbershop Should Offer This Incredible Program For Young Customers

"It takes a village" is the motto of a Ypsilanti, MI, barbershop that promotes childhood literacy through discounted haircuts. The Fuller Cut offers a program for young customers called Read to Your Barber, which gives a $2 discount to any child who reads a book aloud to their stylist while they get their hair trimmed.

Not only do Fuller Cut's young patrons walk away with a new haircut and a healthy appreciation for reading, but they also learn to appreciate rich cultures from a new perspective. "All our books have positive images of African-Americans — whether it's astronauts, athletes or writers," barber Ryan Griffin told Huffington Post about the program that he helped create at Fuller Cut. The barbershop, which caters to a diverse community of customers, has inspired many young children to love learning. Griffin credits Read to Your Barber with helping kids who formerly lacked confidence in the classroom learn to read aloud with gusto.

Griffin told Huffington Post that the most inspiring part of the program is when it encourages literacy secondhand: "When little kids that don't really know how to read or what's going on see an older kid in the chair with a book and then grab a book too, that's what's important." Fuller Cut regularly posts pictures of patrons taking advantage of their hard-earned discount, and we're hopeful that it will inspire other hair salons to follow suit.
