First Day of School Checklist of Supplies

Follow This Mom’s Guide for the Easiest First Day of School Ever

Preparing for the first day of school is a big deal for both students and parents. We've partnered with Target to make this annual milestone a little easier.

For a kid, the first day of school is like starting a new job. You have a new boss (teacher) to impress, new co-workers (classmates), and a whole new agenda to get used to. But first days can be stress-free if students are prepared and feeling good about themselves. That’s where back-to-school shopping comes in — here’s how to shop like a pro for the key items kids need to make the first day a cinch.

First things first: you need some new closet staples and the all-important first-day outfit. Leggings are a perfect, easy go-to since they are comfortable and colorful. (Later they take Fall and Spring pieces into Winter by adding a layer of warmth — bonus.

A backpack is on display daily and holds a kid’s world within its zippers. As long as it’s practically sized and has the storage they need, let your student pick the one they love the most — they’re carrying it all the time!

Graphic tees let kids express their fandoms, personalities, and individual style. Pick out a few that help your student wear elements of their identity front and center — you never know what friends may meet over a shared love of space, animals, or pop culture.

Socks with patterns and slogans in bold tones always keep students looking stylish in a low-key way.

Fashion risks aren’t everyone’s cup of tea on day one, but having a couple of bright and fun accessories on hand can add some creativity to a traditional look. A variety of headbands let a kid experiment with different accent colors.

In the world where pens and pencils are your lifeline, you’ll need a cool pencil case that will keep the ink-and-lead neat and organized. Pop it in a backpack on Day One and it becomes one more accessory that speaks to their taste and personality.

Don’t forget to pick up some patches, zipper charms, and pins to add to backpacks or jackets. They’re a playful and affordable way to add instant style and tell the world even more about how awesome they are.
