4 Designer-Approved Tips That Will Transform a Boring Kids' Room

Justina Blakeney's blog, The Jungalow, has become the blueprint for modern bohemian style. And now, fans of the perfectly eclectic look can do more than ogle Justina's home on their computer screens; they can shop her original designs for their own homes! The designer, artist, and author has collaborated with Pottery Barn Kids on a just-released collection of colorful home decor. The unique designs feature Joanna's hand-drawn patterns and include bedding, lighting, decorative accessories, gifts, and storage solutions. While they were created with nurseries and kids' rooms in mind, we think parents will be stealing a few of these on-trend items for their grown-up spaces.

POPSUGAR had a chance to catch up with trendsetter Justina on the eve of the collection's big release, and she shared with us how we can bring her signature boho-chic style into our own kids' rooms. Check out Justina's four big tips for making your child's room anything but boring in the slideshow ahead, where you'll also get a first look at her collection, which is available in stores and online now.

1. Celebrate Color

1. Celebrate Color

"One big mistake I see often when it comes to decorating a child's room is too much white," says Justina of the biggest design mistake she's seeing parents make. "Lately, I've seen so many nurseries with white rugs, white walls, and all-white furniture! I think that this feels too ascetic — I think nurseries should be fun, with lots of color, pattern, and texture! Let's give these kiddos rooms that ignite their imaginations."

2. Involve Your Kiddo

2. Involve Your Kiddo

"Invite your child into the decorating process. Let them choose paint colors and help paint; give them a designated area where they can draw on the walls! Let them help to choose furniture, and involve them in choosing art that they have on display," advises Justina. "Having children help to create their own environment encourages creativity and gives them a bit of pride in ownership over their space."

3. Add Magical Decor Pieces

3. Add Magical Decor Pieces

Kids' rooms and nurseries may be getting more sophisticated, but that's not a reason to skimp on the whimsy. "Add elements that sparkle, shine, twinkle, and glow to add a touch of magic! Try lamps with cutouts, disco balls, fun nightlights, and even Christmas lights (all year round)," Justina explains.

4. Maximize Natural Light

4. Maximize Natural Light

"Harness natural light and fresh air as much as possible in your child's room," encourages Justina. "You can add mirrors to help reflect light if the room feels dark. Use a double curtain rod (with a light curtain and a heavier one) so you can simulate nighttime at any time of day for ease of naps."
