World Book Day is supposed to celebrate the beauty of reading. While some kids choose to dress up as Harry Potter or Winnie the Pooh, 11-year-old Liam Scholes thought it would be fun show up as one the literary world's most famous modern men — Fifty Shades of Grey's Christian Grey. The Manchester-based tween donned a gray suit, carried an eye mask and some cable ties, and walked into school with a big grin on his face. But he was the only one smiling.
Shortly after school began, Liam's mom, an elementary school teacher herself, received a call from the school's administrators saying that he wouldn't be able to participate in the World Book Day activities, because his costume wasn't appropriate. The mother and the administrators agreed to disagree.
"One of the teachers went dressed as Dexter, and I don't see why sex is seen as more offensive than murder," Nicola Scholes said. "If it was a primary school, I could understand, but it's a secondary school, and the book and the film have been everywhere — it's one of the most famous books in recent years, and it's not like the pupils will be unaware of it."
Though no further action will be taken, the Scholeses are standing by their decision and trying to laugh off the matter. What do you think? Was it inappropriate for middle school?
