Kids Being Poisoned by Vaping Liquid That Looks Like Food
Parents Beware: Kids Are Getting Poisoned From Vaping Liquid Disguised as Junk Food
There are few things more threatening to little kids than a wolf in sheep's clothing. The FDA recently released a statement warning parents that e-cigarette companies are selling nicotine products used for juuling and vaping that look a heck of a lot like products kids love, including candy, juice boxes, and cookies. Although the FDA issued warnings to the companies making these products, it's definitely better to be safe than sorry.
"No child should be using any tobacco product, and no tobacco products should be marketed in a way that endangers kids — especially by using imagery that misleads them into thinking the products are things they'd eat or drink," said FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb. "Looking at these side-to-side comparisons is alarming."
According to the FDA, nicotine poisoning is no joke and can cause seizures, comas, and even death. Unfortunately, these exposures are more common than you may think. Between January 2012 to April 2017, more than 8,200 children under the age of 6 were reportedly exposed to e-cigarette and liquid nicotine. Kids who have nicotine poisoning experience symptoms such as vomiting, abnormal heart rate, and increased blood pressure.
"Companies selling these products have a responsibility to ensure they aren't putting children in harm's way or enticing youth use," said Gottlieb, adding that he promises to, "continue to take action against those who sell tobacco products to youth and market products in this egregious fashion."
