Mom Called Gay Bar For Advice After Her Son Came Out — the Bartender's Response Was Priceless

Kara Coley, a bartender at gay-friendly bar Sipps in Mississippi, has been working the club circuit for nearly two decades. So when she was taken aback by a random phone call she got late last month, you know it had to be memorable. And it was.

When she answered the phone, she heard a frantic mother on the other end of the line. What could have been an awkward, even upsetting conversation, turned out to be one that warmed her heart. She recounted the call on Facebook:

Me: Good evening. Thank you for calling Sipps!
Lady on phone: Is this a gay bar?
Me: Well we are an everybody bar but, yes, mostly gay.
Lady: Can I ask you a question?
Me: Sure.
Lady: Are you gay?
Me: YES MA'AM.
Lady: What was the one thing you wanted from your parents when you a came out?
Me: Umm . . .
Lady: My son just came out to me and I don't want to say anything that may mess him up in the head.
Me: Well, I think that you should just make sure he knows that you love and accept– wait, do you accept it?
Lady: Well, umm, yes if that's what he wants.
Me: You should definitely let him know that you love and accept him! I think everything will be OK from there!
Lady: OK, well, thank you.
Me: You are very welcome and good luck!

We don't know what's more endearing: that this mother, desperate to do the right thing, dialed a gay-friendly club for answers, or that the person on the other end had the decency to answer her questions with compassion.

It's a conversation Kara won't soon forget. As she said: "That's definitely a first for me!"
