With fall — and all of its associated obligations — fast approaching, now is your chance to make the most of these last summer nights at home with your family.

Enter this easy DIY lantern craft. All you need is an empty box of Juicy Juice and a few common art supplies — no candle needed! Plus, it's simple enough for little kids to accomplish (with a bit of help from Mom and Dad) and comes together in just a few minutes. Here's everything you need to make your own miniature lantern.

What You'll Need

  • 1 Juicy Juice box
  • Box cutters
  • Safety scissors
  • Tape
  • Pencil
  • Paint or markers
  • String
  • 1 LED tea light

How to Make a DIY Lantern

First, parents can use the box cutter to remove the top of the juice box. Then, kids can use safety scissors to cut the four side seams of the juice box so it can be opened flat. Wash the inside out, then lay flat to dry.

Once the juice box is dry, have the kids outline fun shapes like squares, triangles, and stars on all four sides of the juice box. Grown-ups can then cut out the shapes using the box cutter. The light from your lantern will shine through those holes.

Time to decorate! Kids can use markers or paint to decorate the four sides of the lantern however they like. After the paint dries, tape the sides of the box back together.

Check that the LED tealight works, then switch it on and place it inside the lantern. Tie the string through two holes on the front and back of the lantern, then knot both sides. If your lantern doesn't have any cut-outs close enough to the top, use a pencil or pen to poke two small holes for the string. Take your lantern outside after dark to admire its glow!
