The Subtle Yet Powerful Ways Parkland Students Honored Lost Friends During Graduation

High school graduations should be happy days that celebrate all of the seniors' accomplishments, but for the 2018 graduating class at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, there was, of course, a bittersweet tone to the day as graduates and their families remembered those who lost their lives when a shooter made his way through the school on Feb. 14, killing 17. Four chairs were left open during the ceremony for Joaquin Oliver, Meadow Pollack, Carmen Schentrup, and Nicholas Dworet, who all should have been present to receive their diplomas on June 3 alongside their peers.

To honor the four seniors — as well as the other 13 students and teachers — who were killed, many members of the class of 2018 sported "MSD Strong" sashes over their maroon gowns and some decorated their caps with memories of their fallen friends as well as the color orange in honor of Everytown's #WearOrange campaign to end gun violence in America.
