Fashion Lessons You Learn in College
13 Fashion Lessons I Wish Someone Had Taught Me Before College
In college you're constantly learning something new . . . and for me, many of these lessons were sartorial. As somebody who studied textiles and clothing at my university, I was surprisingly uninformed about the realities of college fashion. This made itself painfully apparent when I scrolled a few years into my Instagram, hunting for photos to use in this post. I nearly deleted the whole thing.
The number of ill-advised outfits (and hairstyles, for that matter) that I flaunted during my college career are embarrassingly high, but at least they make me a great resource when it comes to fashion lessons everyone should learn before college . . . right? So take it from an expert at learning fashion lessons the hard way and take these to heart; I've worn enough body-con dresses and ugly sweatpants for the both of us.
1 Unless you're in a sorority, you need three pairs of "fancy shoes" max.
2 Wear the damn bikini, because you're at your prime.
3 Everyone dresses as a cat for Halloween; try to be better prepared.
4 Despite what you see in movies, body-con dresses are NOT ideal for partying.
5 Don't be scared of thrift stores . . . they're the best in college towns!
6 During finals week, it's OK to have "house sweats" and "in public sweats." Really.
7 Rompers will become your best friend.
8 Your dorm closet is only so big, so pack for each season.
9 Invest in some comfortable walking shoes; your feet will thank you.
10 Sooner or later, everyone becomes a sweatpants person. Embrace it and try to make yours cute.
11 If an online price sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
12 When it comes to rain gear, it's better to have and not need than to need and not have.
13 You don't have to spend tons of money on university apparel that you'll never wear.
