Let’s Get Campy: 11 Fun-Loving Pieces That Will Be Instant Outfit Makers
On the first Monday in May, New York's Metropolitan Museum will cut the ribbon on this year's Costume Institute Spring exhibit, titled "Camp: Notes on Fashion." In a press release from the museum, it was explained that the sure-to-be head-turning exhibit will "explore the origins of camp's exuberant aesthetic and how the sensibility evolved from a place of marginality to become an important influence on mainstream culture."
While the word "campy" might at first call to mind many a red carpet Lady Gaga getup, an embellished naked dress from the likes of Cher or Beyoncé, as well as some eccentric collection of clothing once found layered on Little Edie Beale, it can also be so much more than that. Whether it's a statement sleeve crafted of a classic white t-shirt; a layered asymmetrical skirt that has most recently become a staple of labels like Monse and Sacai; or the addition of that humorous or whimsical statement piece from Gucci, Marc Jacobs, and more.
So, in celebration of this year's exhibit theme, and in keeping with the words of the Director of the Met, Max Hollein, who explained, "this exhibition will reveal that it has had a profound influence on both high art and popular culture," here are all our favorite campy style must haves for Spring.
The Whimsical Mini
Even the most simple silhouettes can be pumped up by way of a bright color or whimsical pattern. We particularly love this sunglass print for Summer!
The Embellished Day Cami
We dare you to mix a little sparkle into your daytime routine. Consider a light pink sequin top to wear during daylight hours, paired with your favorite jean shorts or trousers.
The Puff-Sleeve Wrap Top
Play with the silhouette of your go-to top this Summer by opting for one that not only boasts puff sleeves, but also a wrap or tie style.

The Asymmetrical Polo
Take a preppy favorite and turn it on its head by way of asymmetrical buttons, integrated print mixing . . . or both!
The Mixed Media Skirt
For the campy experts among us, we're currently obsessing over Chopova Lowena's collection of mini and midi skirts that are crafted of countless bright fabrics and just enough hardware to keep it edgy.

The Exaggerated Peplum Bustier
To get into the campy mood, consider a peplum that is so much more than a peplum, This gingham bustier top does just the trick with its exaggerated and layered waistline.
The Crochet Top
Get crafty with your campy style by mixing some crocheted pieces into your summertime wardrobe this Spring. What's more, with bright colors and graphic stripes, the grandma-inspired look feels more classic than ever.
The Sequin Boxy Top
Leave it to Gwyneth Paltrow to prove that sequins might not be enough when it comes to taking that look to the next level. With a slightly puckered and puffed sleeve, this top is about to be in constant rotation in our closets — morning, noon, and night.
The Patchwork Midi
There's something inherently preppy about this cotton striped midi skirt, but it mixes in just the right amount of whimsical flair in its creation from two different asymmetrically layered materials.
The Sheer Neon Layer
When it comes to layering, we love this sheer neon trick from the early aughts. Layer it over a bralette or under a cami or slip dress. You might never want to take it off!
The New White Shirt
Even the most classic pieces in your wardrobe have been influenced by the campy trend. Take the essential white button-down, for example, which Rosie Assoulin has reimagined in her brand-new sister line, By Any Other Name.
