Australian Accessories Brands You Need to Know

When it comes to Australian design, there are a few key elements that truly stand out. There's the emphasis on practicality and durability, given the country's often harsh weather and outdoor-heavy lifestyle. Designs also tend to be laidback and unpretentious. And the country's strong connection to nature and Indigenous culture is regularly reflected.

These elements together make accessories by Australian designers distinctive, sometimes so much so that you could pick them out of a lineup. So, what are some of the best Australian accessory companies in the market right now? From luggage brands, to jewellery and footwear, these are some of our favourites.

Frank Green

Frank Green is one of the first names many Australians think of when they hear 'water bottle'. The brand launched in 2013 with reusable coffee cups, but has since expanded to water bottles, food containers and pet accessories.

July

July started as an online-only business in 2019 after founders Richard Li and Athan Didaskalou identified a need for durable, stylish luggage at an affordable price. Today, it has 12 stores in Australia and has expanded into bags — totes, backpacks and purses.

R.M. Williams

One of Australia's most iconic brands, R.M. Williams launched in 1932. It produces men's clothing, belts and bags, but is best known for its boots, which are all made in an Adelaide workshop and are meant to last a lifetime.

Akubra

Established in 1876 in the Australian state of Tasmania, Akubra produces hats and hats alone. Each hat takes six weeks to make, in a process involving 162 steps and passing through 60 pairs of hands. All hats are made from felt and feature wide brims.

Lack of Color

Despite the spelling of its name, Lack of Color is in fact an Australian brand. It was founded in 2011, aiming to create hats with traditional shapes but with modern colour and textures. Today it stocks cowboy hats, bucket hats, sun hats and fedoras.

Brie Leon

Brie Leon's first iteration in 2016 was as an online boutique with a tight edit of vintage-inspired jewellery and handmade pieces upcycled by its founder Janine Zafra. It now has bags, shoes and belts – designed and created in a Sydney studio.

Alana Maria

Alana Maria is an Australian jewellery label, founded by Alana Ellis who used to sell beaded bracelets to her school classmates. Pieces are gold-filled to be long-lasting and tarnish-resistant and are handmade in Australia. The brand has a solid collection too.

Temple of the Sun

Temple of the Sun creates jewellery, including earrings, rings and necklaces, informed by history and nature — ready-made or custom. The designs are all timeless, meant to be worn forever. The brand was founded in 2015 by creative couple Yonna Derofe and Darren Gallant.

Alias Mae

Tom Kirkhope was the range builder for another shoe brand when he decided to go out on his own, founding Alias Mae in 2011. The brand, which doesn't have any brick-and-mortar stores of its own, stocks nearly every type of shoe in ever-changing trendy styles.

Sarah and Sebastian

Sarah and Sebastian is an Australian fine jewellery brand founded by Sarah Gittoes and Robert Sebastian Grynkofki in 2012. The duo's shared love of the ocean is a major source of inspiration behind their designs.
