Chanel's New Designer Shows a 2020 Collection of Sensual, Feminine Fluidity

Chanel hosted its Métiers d'Art 2019/2020 show at the opulent Le Grand Palais in Paris on Wednesday, Dec. 4. This was the house's fourth show under the creative direction of newly appointed Virginie Viard, who has succeeded the late designer Karl Lagerfeld. For the new collection, Viard collaborated with Sofia Coppola — the director behind films like Marie Antoinette (2006) — for an '80s-inspired show surrounded by a re-creation of Coco Chanel's Parisian apartment. The collection was dripping in movement, color, and a fresh relaxed femininity that was previously unseen at Chanel.

If you're wondering the meaning of "Métiers d'Art," then you're not the only one. It translates to "Master of Art" which means that a highly skilled atelier relentlessly crafted all pieces of the collection to the highest standard. Chanel Métiers d'Art 2019/2020 was truly a fresh take on the Chanel woman. Where we were used to seeing her in quite boxy silhouettes in the age of Lagerfeld, Virginie's Chanel woman walks with a feminine fluidity, as much as a powerful '80s sensuality that is truly captivating. The collection featured romantic, draped white silk, pink, fur-trimmed pieces, plus tie-dye and two-tone looks that brought a new youthful glamor to the house.
