Cosmos For a Cause 2022

The Cosmopolitan Is the Classic Cocktail Your Holiday Celebrations Deserve

In the canon of classic cocktails, few are as universally beloved as The Cosmopolitan. For some, the negroni may be too bitter, while others might find the martini to be too strong. On the other hand, The Cosmopolitan is light, refreshing, and approachable.

The Cosmopolitan, indeed a classic, is actually more of a modern invention. Bartender Toby Cecchini is credited with creating the recipe, using Cointreau, back in 1988. He tinkered with a pink-hued martini recipe to include higher-quality ingredients, turning the cocktail into what it is today: a little sweet, not too boozy, and, best of all, pink.

The drink then gained popularity through appearances on a certain New York-based TV show and was given the nickname The "Cosmo." Nowadays, it’s one of the country’s most recognizable cocktails that anyone can appreciate.

But what exactly goes into a Cosmopolitan? The recipe is surprisingly simple with only four ingredients: one part Cointreau, one part cranberry juice, one part fresh lime juice, and two parts vodka. Then it's shaken hard with ice and served up in a cocktail glass — don't forget the classic orange twist.

Thanks to its simplicity, The Cosmo is an ideal choice for both hosting and ordering out at a bar. There's no fancy bar equipment needed: just a cocktail shaker, some ice, and a coupe. That's what makes The Cosmopolitan so universal.

Like most classic drinks, The Cosmopolitan works for any occasion and season, but it's especially fitting for the holidays. The cranberry juice hints at seasonality without being too in-your-face about it, while the bright-pink finish and sophisticated coupe feel elevated and fun — the perfect vibe to match your holiday celebrations.

In the season's spirit of giving, Cosmopolitans can even help give back to the hospitality industry thanks to Cointreau's Cosmos For a Cause program. Cointreau is partnering with local bars and restaurants to raise money for Tales of the Cocktail Foundation, a nonprofit organization that aims to educate, support, and advance members of the hospitality community. Through Dec. 31, 2022, Cointreau has pledged to donate a portion of sales, up to $100,000, for every Cosmopolitan purchased at a participating bar and restaurant.
