Prepare to Be Floored by This Affordable Bathroom Makeover

Contrary to popular belief, it is actually possible to renovate an entire room in your home without spending thousands of dollars. Just take a look at Bless'er House blogger Lauren Shaver's rustic bathroom remodel via Hometalk.

When we first started picking out upgrades when building our house two years ago, we used what little extra we had on the things we knew we couldn't DIY — a floor plan with more storage capability, an elevation with a front porch, and a bigger master bathroom.

The rest on our wish list to take it from builder basic to something with more character would have to wait . . . until now!

Cost: $375

This space started out with everything builder grade — white primer walls, a basic frameless mirror, plain window, simple nickel framed shower door.
It was a very blank slate, but it is really nice having that clean canvas to work with instead of replacing old, outdated features.

It just needed a fresh style and a calming ambience, and I wanted to create my vision for less than $400.

Here's what we ended up with:

We chose to paint our cabinets a lighter gray (Benjamin Moore Winter Gates) to open up the narrow room and make it feel more airy.

I used label pulls to help organize our toiletries and add a little vintage flair. We repurposed an old ladder we pulled out of my in-laws' barn, cleaned it up, and used it as a towel rack.

We installed a plank wall behind our tub using plain pine boards, stained with tea and vinegar, and coated in marine grade polyurethane. We accompanied it with an old window and added pages from a thrifted Audubon field guide for art.

For the nickel framed shower, I DIYed it to look like an industrial factory window.

To give our moulding-less window some character, we added trim and a header along with a woven bamboo shade.

In our water closet, we hung up a cubby shelf to store any odds and ends like washcloths and bath salts.

We pulled down the builder grade mirror (which now resides in our garage where my husband lifts weights and wanted it to check his form), and we replaced it with two framed mirrors I found on clearance for $19 each.

It's been so nice to have our little retreat to wake up to every day.
