Emmy Rossum's NYC Apartment Is More Traditional Than You're Expecting, But Every Inch as Glamorous

Shameless star Emmy Rossum grew up in Manhattan, but it wasn't until she recently purchased an 800-square foot prewar apartment that she had a place of her own in the city. The cozy-but-dated one-bedroom apartment, affectionately referred to by Emmy as a "pied-à-teardown," had great bones, but it needed some serious help. Emmy contacted Elle Decor, and they led her to interior designer Antonino Buzzetta, whose modern take on traditional glamour was exactly what she was looking for. After a massive overhaul, the space now exudes fresh, young energy while being traditional enough to feel at home in Paris — where, coincidentally, many of the decor pieces are from. Keep reading for a peek into the apartment ahead along with insights directly from Emmy and then head to Elle Decor to check out the complete feature.

Emmy and her mother purchased the antique fireplace at the Marché aux Puces in Paris. She explains, “we FedExed it back to New York. It was amazing that it showed up perfectly packaged and absolutely fine a week later. I love the idea that I have a fireplace from a trip to France I took with my mother. It’s so sentimental and nice. If I ever move, I’ll have to rip the fireplace out and take it with me.”

To create the modern, bright kitchen, Antonio opened up a wall and added a breakfast bar. The designer didn't stress about pairing brass hardware on the cabinet pulls and the Circa Lighting pendants with stainless finishes. "Mixing metals is a much more relaxed approach," he told Elle Decor.

Emmy told the magazine she wanted a design that was, “chic, European, the look of a modern girl who has inherited her grandmother’s stuff. I wanted it to have a young energy, but with old-fashioned touches.”

The completed apartment is chic and vibrant, blending the actress's young energy with classic European flair. In addition to modernizing the floor plan, Emmy also added personal touches such as artwork by her mother, photographer Cheryl Rossum. While the project was a lot of work, she says she would not only do it all over again, she would like to tackle an even bigger reno project one day. “I’m hoping one day to gut a townhouse. That would just be the ultimate.”
