8 Reasons to Fall in Love With Marble Countertops

Marble is hot right now, and it's easy to see why. It's an elegant surface with beautiful streaks of color, but after installation, some people have had some buyer's remorse. When my husband and I were remodeling our kitchen, everyone told us to avoid marble. Even when we went into marble stores, the first words out the seller's mouth were, "Are you sure?"

Marble, unlike quartz or even granite, can stain and scratch, and people who sell marble don't want to get into a situation where they're getting yelled at a couple of months after the install because the customer's beautiful kitchen doesn't look brand new anymore.

Ignoring practically everyone, we put Carrara marble (it's white with gray streaks) in our navy kitchen and not a day goes by, three years later, that I don't thank my lucky stars that we did. Our countertops are stunningly beautiful, and their sensitivity has been greatly exaggerated. There are so many reasons to fall in love with marble, but these are some of the reasons people should give marble a second chance.

01

It's a Classic

Step into any kitchen remodeled in the early 2000s and you'll see why it's important to ignore overly trendy pieces. Tile countertops and bleached-oak cabinets today feel remarkably dated. Even though marble counters are definitely trendy right now, they're also exceptionally classic. The use of marble in kitchens goes back centuries and spans continents. If marble is good enough for the Taj Mahal, it's good enough for my kitchen.

02

There's More Than 1 Color Option

When people think marble, they're likely thinking of Carrara or Calacatta, which is white as a base with gorgeous streaks of gray and gold. However, there are thousands of colors and marble types. Gray, blue, green, purple, red, and almost any color you can think of can be found for marble countertops. This diversity of options means that each person's kitchen, despite using the supposedly trendy marble, can be entirely unique.

03

It Looks Good With Every Color Palette

No matter what kind of marble is used, this is one elegant countertop that pairs well with any kitchen color scheme. Marble helps white kitchens look even cleaner and makes vibrant cabinets pop. With that kind of flexibility, you'll struggle to pick just one color.

04

It's Surprisingly Affordable

If marble was going to break our limited kitchen budget, we weren't going to do it. After all, money does not grow on trees. Thankfully, marble is a surprisingly affordable option, often significantly cheaper than quartz and other engineered surfaces. Box stores like Home Depot and Lowe's are great places find the countertop of your dreams without going into debt.

It Transforms Small Kitchens

Small kitchens are transformed into luxurious spaces with the addition of marble. If you have a small kitchen, using marble gives it a finished and put-together feel. Countertops are very often the first thing people see when they walk into a kitchen, so what better way to wow them than with a cool slab of natural beauty?

It's Perfect For Baking

There's a reason bakeries, ice cream shops, and patisseries have marble counters: they stay cold. When you're working with pastries and ice cream, it's best to work on a colder surface since it's less likely to soften dough or melt things. Marble is a hard, dense surface and is perfect for rolling out some flour on and practicing making homemade macarons or croissants.

07

It's Surprisingly Durable

For all of the complaints about marble staining and scratching, there sure are a lot of bars, cafes, and restaurants that prominently feature marble counters. While I'll admit that, yes, scratches and stains can happen if you're not careful, most spots and lines can be wiped away pretty easily. Vinegar is the only thing so far that has made a permanent spot in our stone. We've left red wine glasses out all night and missed spots of tomato sauce by accident, only to have them wipe away clean with no damage.

Stone counters can grow with a kitchen and tell a story of years of love.

It Encourages a Clean Kitchen

Even though marble is tougher than people think, that doesn't mean you can let dripping pots and pans sit on it for days. Having marble will encourage you to keep a clean kitchen, in part because you don't want laziness to have any lasting damage, and also because your kitchen will be so beautiful that you'll want it to look clean and presentable at all times.
