How 1 Mom Turns Back-to-School Shopping Into an Empowering Lesson of Confidence

We've teamed up with H&M to show how one mommy influencer uses back-to-school shopping as a tool to teach her kids to feel confident this school year.

Mommy blogger and content creator Lizzie Haro knows a thing or two about having the confidence to embrace one's uniqueness. With heads of hair that inspired her online persona @curlyduo, both of Lizzie's children are filled to the brim with energy, personality, and — just like mom — certain style standards.

According to Lizzie, 8-year-old Aubrie is a creative artist who embraces all things glitter and color when it comes to her life, closet, and accessory collection. Meanwhile Damien, at just 5-years-old, already has a strong fashion identity and can be harder to please. "He is very precise on what he wants, and it all depends on his mood," explains Lizzie.

So when it comes to allowing her kids’ personalities to shine through, Lizzie steps aside and lets her superopinionated and outgoing children's personalities come out. She's learned that empowering them to embrace their own styles through shopping and accessorizing gives them the confidence and creativity they yearn for. Ahead, we’ll follow along as Aubrie and Damien style their back-to-school wardrobes while hearing firsthand from Lizzie about raising two strong-minded and fearless kids.

"Aubrie's style is preppy, girlie girl, and sporty," says Lizzie. "She loves dresses, bright colors, glitter, and accessorizing with jewelry, headbands, and a backpack to match her darling personality. Dressing her is easy — she very much reminds me of me."

When it's time to head back to school, Aubrie will set her clothes aside the night before to ensure her look meets all her fashion standards the next day. "She's very well-off on her own now," says Lizzie. "She's got it down!"

But at first, Lizzie didn't fully understand what an important step this was for her children's confidence. "I didn’t realize letting them pick their own outfits was more than just that. It teaches them independence, they find their own styles, and learn along the way," says Lizzie. "I want them to also know I’m here to guide them, but nobody determines what colors, styles, and patterns they should be wearing but them."

And while Aubrie has already developed a keen sense of fashion independence, Damien still needs a bit of guidance and assistance from Lizzie. "He will ask for specific hats to match his outfit," says Lizzie. "And when he’s not wearing a hat, his hair has to be styled nicely, with a few curls dropping down his forehead . . . perfectly curled."

That being said, he already has very strong opinions about his closet, gravitating toward a more traditional style.

"My little guy refuses to pick his clothes the night before, so I do it," says Lizzie. "And every morning, he wants to change it. He goes through a few changes before he’s happy with his outfit."

"His style is urban hipster, but he primarily prefers to look rather dapper," says Lizzie. "He has a collection of bow ties and ties and loves to pick out which one to wear."

But, at the end of the day, they're still kids. Lizzie says she tries hard to curb her own opinions about what they're wearing. "Let them look silly," says Lizzie. "Damien wears a monkey suit to the store. Aubrie likes wearing mismatching socks. It’s OK!"

Even when she's internally cringing at their outfit picks, Lizzie explains the pros definitely outweigh the cons.

"The confidence that shines when they walk out of the house is worth it," says Lizzie. "They are exploring different styles. Selecting outfits based on moods and favorites. They even express things that are important to them. Like protecting animals!"

And yes, when styling out their outfits, Aubrie explained how much she loves unicorns, while Damien exclaimed, "My favorite animals are dinosaurs!"

As their style has grown and developed, Lizzie is definitely gearing up for this season's back-to-school shopping. "They want everything," says Lizzie. But there are a few "great hits" that are guaranteed to be on the list. Aubrie needs glitter, sequins, and tons of accessories like necklaces and bracelets, while Damien wants to stock up on bow ties, blazers, hats, and slip-on shoes. "We're still learning to tie his shoes," says Lizzie.

And while these two seem like style pros, they're still kids. "Coming to terms with them that they have to make a decision is hard. Not to mention the amount of time we have to spend in the stores for them to decide."
