Benicia Police Buy Bike For Teenager Who Walks Far to Work

This Story of an Officer Helping a Teenager Who Walked 2 Hours to Work Will Make Your Day

Jourdan Duncan is far from your average 19-year-old. Duncan just graduated from high school and works a packaging job at Pro-Form Laboratories in Benicia, CA. With no car and no other way to get to work, Duncan was walking two hours each way from his parents' house in Vallejo to his job seven miles away — until a police officer stopped him while he was leaving work.

Cpl. Kirk Keffer, who is an officer for the Benicia Police Department, saw Duncan leaving work one night around 11, according to The Washington Post. Keffer was concerned that Duncan was not OK, while Duncan though the officer was going to arrest him. Keffer ended up driving Duncan home that night. On the ride, Keffer asked Duncan why he was walking so far; he thought surely Duncan had other options.

On top of trying to save money for college, Duncan's car engine broke down and he was unable to repair it. Duncan told The Washington Post, "I didn't want to always call somebody and be like, 'Hey, can you pick me up?' That would have took a lot of people's time."

Not even Duncan's parents knew he was walking two hours to work every day. Flabbergasted and impressed by Duncan's dedication, Keffer tried to figure out a way he could make the commute easier for Duncan. His solution? Buy Duncan a bike.

Keffer is on the board of the Benicia Police Officers' Association, so he approached the board about buying Duncan a bike. The board unanimously agreed, so Keffer visited a local bike store and purchased a bike for $500. Also moved by Duncan's commitment, the owner of the store donated a lighting system, brake light, and helmet to the teen.

When Keffer surprised Duncan at work with the bike, he said, "We would like to acknowledge your hard work and dedication for what you do and setting the example for kids your age."

Convinced it was a trick at first, Duncan was shocked but grateful. Since the Benicia Police Department shared Duncan and Keffer's story on Facebook, it's gone viral. The two have remained in contact and since Duncan wants to work in law enforcement himself one day, Keffer has offered to take him on ride-alongs. Perhaps one day Duncan will be able to positively affect someone else's life, like Keffer did for him.
